It's simple and hopefully extremely easy to make your own diary now.

Click on the "Jourrnals" tab at the top of the page.

Then click on "Manage your own garden diary".

Hopefully it's so simple that it won't need explanation.

Main features:

1) Tabs. Create tabs to categorize your content. Tabs are optional and you can just use the default "Miscellanous" tab if you wish.

2) Pictures - one per entry just like posts in threads.

3) Privacy settings. You can set individual entries as private or public. A locked icon will appear on those private entries.

4) No threads built-in. I got mixed feedback on that feature so I backed off for now. At the moment, your diary is standalone and nobody can comment on them.

Sometime soon, I will make the ability for you to view other people's journals. For right now, that's not available. (Edited: this is available now, too)

Request - on the front page, could we have the menus show the entries in each category instead of having to click on a heading first? Or have the listing show up on the front page once a category is clicked?

PudgyMudpies, you can now delete a tab.

Just go into the tab and, if the tab is empty of entries, you'll have the option to delete the tab.

Donna,

I don't understand what you are asking for.

Right now, you go to the Diaries main page and you see all the users.

Click on a username.

Then you see all their tabs.

Click on a tab.

Then you see all their entries.

How would you rather see it?

BTW I love the menu to the right!! Could you make it bit more narrow so that we have more room for viewing the entry?

Maybe it's just because I found my own method in the old journal for creating a diary, but I found the lack of a date field to be an issue. I tested copying some of my April journal over, using the title field for the date. I copied some out of sequence to see if it would reorder it based on alpha-numeric order...nope.

Since it is a diary, I think having a date field would be logical. (I realize not everyone will use it exactly the same way, though. How do most blogs work?)

Ok ...I've started working on mine and a couple of thoughts/questions.

Can you delete the Miscellaneous default tab? I see that Terry has only April 2005 as her diary so I'm guessing we can change the name of Miscellaneous or delete it, but I can't figure it out.

Can we have the ability to create sub-tabs or sub-levels within a diary? I created one called Daily Diary and would like to have sub-tabs for each month of the year.

When I was in the Daily Diary view I tried to create a new tab of April 2005 thinking it would be a sub-tab (sort of like sub-categories in the Journal) but it just created a whole new tab called April 2005. Then I went to the Miscellaneous one and clicked on Delete this Tab and it asked if I was sure I wanted to delete the April 2005 tab! It didn't recognize that I was viewing the Miscellenous tab. I then went to the one I created called To Do Items and clicked again on Delete Tab and it again asked if I wanted to delete the April 2005 tab. It's almost like it's "stuck" on the last tab in the list when it comes to deleting tabs.

Is there ANY way we can have the ability to post a photo to an entry AFTER the entry is created? I hate that about our Journals and often copy an entries text to delete it and re-create it with a photo. Adding a pic after the fact would be GREAT!

Dave, thanks so much for creating such a fun new feature! :)

I did have the same trouble that Brenda (langbr) had, though. I tried to delete tabs and was repeatedly taken to a different tab for the delete step. For instance, I tried to delete "What's Blooming (Spring)" and the next screen asked if I was sure I wanted to delete "Brainstorming". I could not get the Miscellaneous tab to delete at all w/o deleteing all of my other tabs.

I've been trying to get stuck in the diary, though. Troubleshooting and all that :) This was truly the only problem I ran across. It would be nice if the diary could "remember" what tab we had clicked on when we go to add an entry instead of the user always having to highlight the tab. Like Terry, I moved some journal entries over to the diary and I cannot tell you how many times I pasted something into the wrong tab because I forgot to highlight the one I wanted. I'm too used to the journal's feature of automatically applying things to the tab you're currently working in, I guess. It would be great to click on "Spring 2005" and then "New Entry", knowing that the entry you add will automatically go under the "Spring 2005" tab.

Adding the dates was a fantastic idea. I hadn't taken a look at the journals before you added the dates, but I can tell you that that is HUGE for me :) I'm using the diary mainly to track bloom times and favorite bloom combinations... dates are imperative! LOL -- thanks so so much :)

Hi Dave,

User error in the Diary?

New entry scenario: After the second entry, under one tab, the date is off by one day even though I did not click in the date selector. Entry was made on April 19th and date selector says April 19th, when the entry is complete and being viewed it says April 18.

Edit Scenario:I was adding a plant list to one entry and went back to make changes 3 times and the date ended up as April 16th. When I put in April 20th while editing it showed up as April 19th when viewing the completed entry.
Maybe I am not supposed to be making so many entries for one day? I have five entries so far today in my brick & mortar tab.
Thank you so much for this new feature... It is absolutely BRILLIANT

I would like to be able to move stuff from my regular journal to the diary also...the cornhusk doll instructions for one.

I'm thinking that they would be more accessable in the diary. I've got some weird categories and subs and unless I actually give someone the link to the doll instructions...they'd never find it...of course this was done back when DG only had one picture per thread and there was no other way to get multiple pictures strung together for the instructions. 3) Move items from journal to diary: yes. It's now on the TODO.

Dave - don't mean to be a pest, but was wondering if you've made any progress on the date recording incorrectly? I've noticed that it definitely is always showing date entered - 1 day. Then if you edit the entry the date is then -2 (I think it's because it now sees the stored date as entered date - 1).

New request
Would anyone else like to see their entries in reverse date order? Meaning have it show last entry first. I'm finding that I'm having to scroll to the bottom to see my last entry. After 30 days that's going to be a lot of scrolling.

Dave - might be nice to have (at some point) the ability to skip to specific date. A lot of folks requested this new "diary" because they like to go back and look at the weather on a given date (say last year at this time). It would be a HUGE plus to be able to key in "04/22/2004" and it list the entries starting with that on onward. That way if you want to see the week of 4/22 you could read as far forward of the entered date as you like (say you're looking for the last freeze you had).

I'd have to agree with langbr, the date is definitely a pesky bug.

I like the fact my home page now announces when I last updated my diary (public embarassment is a good motivator for me ;o)

But the date needs to be fixed, and also the navigation - after I add an entry, it asks me if I want to go back to my diary, but instead it takes me to wherever I was before I entered the journal tab (usually a forum.)

I personally can't think of much else that I'd want to see in the diary - if we start piling more features into it, it will become as complicated as the journal and I think the more simple and streamlined it is, the easier and more user-friendly it will be.

yay! I imported my journal "log" over and it went without a hitch. (and yes, the date issue seems to be resolved...everything in my "old" (beta) diary suddenly had the correct date.

Any chance we can edit the name of a tab once we create it?

Dave,

Thank you for all of the updates and the new diary. Before my question I have to tell you that I am very impressed with your willingness to ask for user input and work with the members. After receiving the email about the updates I was so impressed that I decided to pay for a subscription.

Thank you for all your work on this site.

I can't believe that I missed the HUGE drop box that lets you pick the tab. Sorry about the not so intelligent question

Dave,

You seem to enjoy what you do so very much. You're also pretty good at providing great customer satisfaction. I applaud you, and all your computer wizardry! Boy, I could NEVER do anything like what you do with davesgarden.

I've been into my diary today, and adding tabs and entries. You've made it amazingly easy--even for someone as simple-minded as me!

I thought this was already on your TODO list that you posted on April 20th, but don't see it. Will we be able to delete a tab that does not have any entries?

And a gentle nudge again on being able to jump to a specific date and being able to reverse the display to be most recent first.

I have logged out and back in, refreshed my screen, closed and re-opened my browser, clicked in using the shortcut, typed in the web address, but no matter what I do, every time I click on "manage your own garden diary", it takes me straight to dstartz's (Donna's) tab "Plants From CTRU." I know that we nixed the idea of people posting comments to the diary in the diary, but do you think we could still have a way to "watch" a given diary or tab? I already know of a few that I would like to be notified of whenever there are updates.

Ever since someone told me that I can hit the "home" key to get back to the top of a page and the "end" key to go straight to the bottom, I haven't felt a need for the "back to the top of this thread" or "skip to new" options that we have on the threads. So, getting to the bottom of a tab to add new entries (because I like to reveiw what I've most recently written frist) is not a problem for me. I just would like for my tabs to read like the threads, oldest on top, newest at the bottom.

I do see langbr's point for her purposes.

I created two new tabs that I added entries to right away and those I can access ... but how do I delete the useless ones? Also the list on the right of the main page says "diaries" not "tabs" ... this is confusing ...

There is definitely a bug. I added two categories (test and test 2) and both of them suddenly had 18 entries. When I tried to delete the tab, I couldn't. When I tried to delete an entry, it let me - but said I was deleting it from a tab entitled "untitled".

I then tried to add another, real tab (thinking maybe my "test" tab name was causing the problem.) Same problem. I also can't add any entries to this new tab (titled Shelby's Garden).

Hi, Dave. I am super excited about the new diary. I tried to use it for the first time today, but was not able to make entries. I set up several tabs, but when I click on the newly created tabs, there is no option to "Add a new entry" on the right side of the screen. The only options under Tasks are "Add a tab" and "Delete a tab." Here is what the text said I should be able to do:

"Congratulations! You have made your first tab, and you are now ready to start adding entries to your diary. To do that, please click on "Add a new entry" over on the right-hand side of this page.but this tab is empty."

I looked on the right side of the screen and the only options were to "Add a tab" and "Delete a tab."

Mary, welcome to the garden!! Isn't the diary great?

To read other diaries, click the Journals tab at the top of this (and every) screen, and under Diaries you have the choice of either "Manage your own garden diary" or "View other garden diaries". Choose the viewing others option, and it takes you to a list of everyone who has diary entries that are public, in order of the most recent posts to the oldest posts. You can just click on a username from there to go directly to the diary.

You can also go to an individual's home page by clicking on their username from a post, and under the "Actions" heading you can click on "Read xxx's Garden Diary". But if they don't have any public entries in a diary, that link just won't exist. When you are reading different threads, or "tabs" in the diaries, you can clcik to watch it, just like you can click to watch threads. I have a couple that I keep my eye on.

Hope this helps!

Dave, thanks again for the diary. Any chance that you'll change back or make an option for viewing the entries from beginning to end?

While it is in the newest-to-oldest post order, I've noticed on several people's diaries that if they make two entries with the same date - maybe the entry had "part 1" and "part 2", that the second post was actually underneath the first post. So, If I am trying to read the posts in chronilogical order (for example the progress of a project), as I scroll/read from the bottom up the order would be day 1, day 2 part 2, day 2 part 1, day 3.

maggie's right - and I am one of those people. I've tried re-entering my entries for those dates to make them reverse-chronological, and something in the system won't let me do it with any consistency, no matter if I enter the last one first, or vice-versa. The only thing I didn't try to manipulate was adding a title to each - would that help?

I'd recommend that if a diary is going to be in reverse-chronological order, then multiple entries for a single date also be in reverse order to how they are entered.

(It would also be great if we had the ability to determine on a tab-by-tab basis if we want it in chronological or reverse chronological order.)

Dave,

I just noticed that my "Garden Site" says my Garden Diary was last updated April 19th, but I actually updated it Aug 1st, and a few times between those dates, as well.

Also, have you given any more thought to at least allowing us to choose whether we want the entries sorted by 1st-to-last dates or last-to-first dates? I'd really like mine to be sorted 1st-to-last.

Thanks,
Maggie

edited to add:

I just noticed that a number of other people I checked on have the wrong (an old) date as the latest update of their diary. Not earthshattering stuff, just thought you'd want to know.

And, since multiple entries under the same date appear old-to-new, in that case, the diary would be new-to-old, but suddenly old-to-new under certain days.

Please?

I'M STUCK AND DO NOT KNOW WHY! On day #1 I placed several pix with text into my diary. They fell into place the way my story develops. On day #2 I placed another pix with text...the next step or another step in the story development. It is placed on top of day #1 entry #1. I can not figure out how to move this entry to the bottom so that it is placed into the developing story diary leaving my day #1 pix and text the top or header of the diary. This diary story...if this difficulty can be resolved...will be a complete and accurate show and tell story about Giant Pumpins some hundred or so pix with text.

Go into the tab in your diary that you want to change the order of. In the navigation bar you'll see an option that says "edit this tab". If you go into that, then you'll see a place to choose whether to display oldest or newest entries first.

ecrane3...this 'ole dog thanks you. Seems I am to literal. I was trying to work within: Change Order, of this tab. Incorrectly I thought each entry was a tab. Edit, to me, did not suggest the change I needed. :) Mercy I still find it difficult to hit the Start Button to begin my stop or close action.

I am pleased to have this diary option to create a "How to " much to large for a published normal gardening subject. I will be more pleased if folks find it and use it to grow the great pumpkin.

Sorry, I can't wade through this entire thread!! What is the difference between a 'diary' and a 'journal'?

A diary (or blog as it is now called) is a free-form text field just like a blank diary page. You can also attach one image per entry. You can make as many entries as you like and set up different diaries based on whatever distinction you like.

The Journal is like a database where you create a new record (item) and can add numerous entries (text comment field) under each item. You may add one image per entries under each record (item). Additionally there are several defined fields that you can set up for your records in order to classify them. Because this is a gardening journal feature those defined fields are: Common Name, Cultivar, Genus, Species, Location, and Status. You can have numerous Journals as well. You may want to have one journal for outdoor gardening, another journal for greenhouse, and another for indoor houseplants.

Feel free to look at my Diary (blog) and my Journal (outdoor gardening) to see an example of how these 2 can be used. Just click on my name to see links to both of them.

I'm sorry. I must be exceptionally stupid or something. Direction#1 is 'find the Journals/Diary TAB at the TOP of the page.

1)at the top of my page where the tabs are, I see only stuff about communities guides and information, tools, home, products and sources. Nothing about journals and nothing about diaries.

2) at the RIGHT SIDE of the page I see A MENU that says, amongst other things DG JOURNALS and DIARIES but if I click that it takes me to a forum, THIS forum in fact, where wer TALK about having a diary.

Alll I want is a place to write what I'm doing in my garden that's EASY to get to and EASY to find and EASY to find again. I don't want to TALK about writing. I want to WRITE and have done, before I can't remember anymore what it was I was giong to write down (too late, actually.).

I thought I knew this place but yesterday I found something like ebay here. It was like finding the door to fairyland at the bottom of your garden. One day it was there, today, it might as well have been a dream.

I'm sure it's my fault, but I'm pretty disgusted. I seem to be writing emails like this more and more. I must be losing what little mind I had left.

Dave rearranged the home page since this thread was started--you can find your blog/diary if you click on the My Tools tab.
