Cherimoya, Custard Apple
Annona cherimola

Cherimoya in early April. Fruit set on in September. New flowers opening now. I hope George is trying to create a fruit with fewer seeds!

What do they taste like? I wish we could grow them here in Maryland.

Hi Cap: Not a chance of growing them in Maryland except in a hot house. The flavor is unique and hard to describe. It is something like vanilla ice cream with an extra tropical, spicey tang. Maybe some of the other Cherimoya growers can add their impressions of the taste of this delicious, sweet fruit. The only negative thing about it is the numerous, large seeds throughout. There is a grower of Cherimoyas in northern San Diego county who says he ships tons of the fruit all over the country. You might look in special high class grocery stores for them. They will be expensive. Right here in San Diego they sell at $4/5 a pound.
They grow readily from seed and have attractive foliage that is very fragrant when crushed. I think they would make nice house plants until they get too tall.
Good Luck in your search. WalterT
