I recently purchased a small leaf rake at Family Dollar for $3.00, it's about 1/3 the size of a regular leaf rake and has an extendable handle. Originally I bought it to clean leaves from under my Mom's shrubs but it has been invaluable while mulching and planting flowers this spring. It's just the right size to move mulch around between plants and get in small spaces or under shrubs.
Just thought I'd mention it since it's saved meso much work!

I have to tell you that my four year old daughter's rake (it's real, just small) is the best! It's about 6 inches wide at the fork end, and about 2 1/2 feet long. I can get inside bushes, behind plants, in between's great!

I have a long-handled rake that is adjustable for width, down to about 5-6" wide and up to nearly a full size rake width. Don't remember where I got it but it was pretty cheap and works wonders for raking in and around shrubs and plants.

Ivy1 (if you're still around) - I love using kid-size tools, even if they're just the toy ones. I don't know why no one's ever made a line of shorter, female-sized tools - they'd make a mint!
