Can anyone tell me how to prune this tree while it is 4 to 6ft tall. Do you prune the top of the tree. It looks that way in this photo. Do you prune below the lower leaves? We want it to bush out not just grow straight up. Thanks.

Smokie;

I live in zone 7b, these trees naturalized on roadsides, and look so beautiful every spring. Last year I noticed they bloomed right around the time our also wild growing Wisteria on the side of road way along with dogwoods, redbuds, among other pine trees and decidious greenery (thus, they can tolerate shade?). I really don't know well enough about their growing habits. I however have purchased a couple of them from a mail-order catalog. They sent me little bare-root trees, about the size of pencils. So happen, both were cut-off from the top. Thus left my 'trees' about 5-6" height. I noticed the wood is rather weak, and hollow. But they appear to be alive (green wood). So I potted them. We can learn more about this trees, together, if you'd contact me later? All I know is that these beautiful trees is constantly dropping something (either flowers, or branches) due to its weak woods. So I'm looking for a sheltered place in the garden to plan them out later when they're big enough to survive on their own.
