This is my first real bloom of the season... it is an Al Almand. I was fortunate enough to know his (I think) nephew, Dennis Almand. Also a relative of the cultivator of Almand Joy (his grandfather??). Dennis and his wife Dee (Diane) operated Almand's Dahlia Farm near me for many years, earning awards at some of the California competitions. Dennis is no longer with us, so each time I see one of the dahlias I either purchased from or was given by Dennis, I think of him.
