The Saugus(MA) Garden Club just had a trip to Newport, RI last month to see The Green Animals. This is a summer "cottage" in Newport where the owners bought a farm and transformed it into their little summer place. The house is not as grand as the ones across the bay, but there are 81 topiaries in several acres of beautiful gardens. They are having a problem with a fungus which has taken out a great deal of their short ornamental box hedges and they are considering what to replace them with. The beds at the entrance had huge double poppies and they had matched and coordinated colors with the other plants in the beds. There were beautiful russet colored ones and they had sweet peas and a couple of other types of flowers that matched in color. They grew these from seed. They have roses and a vegetable garden and a small greenhouse. The house is a museum and you can choose this house as one of the Newport restoration mansions to visit if you buy a multiple ticket. It's a lovely place to visit on a June day. We had a great time.
