Some of these customers that come along are incredible. I had a married couple, in their 50's, I'd say, who bought 20# of beets last week. They ordered 10# of Pickling Cucumbers for this week.

This morning, they drove up to the stand. She stayed in the car, he got out puffing on a cigerette and looked all around behind the stand and into where I keep back up supplies. I asked him, "May I help you?" He replied, "Yeah, ...Pickling Cucumbers."

I pointed to where I keep the filled orders and said, "Your order is over there, not behind the counter."

He looked at it and fumbled around with them and said, "$17.00 for these?" as though he was astonished by the price or something. I said, "Yes, and no." "I charged you 25 cents for the container so it's $17.25." I glanced at the car and his wife was sitting there looking the other way. She wouldn't even look my way. I knew right away there was something up and that's why he came in rather than the two of them like before. Then it dawned on me. The flyer in the News Paper for one of the Grocery Stores in town, had Pickling Cucumbers for 99 cents a pound. He was trying to weasle out of the order. I got angry but kept my cool.

He said, "That's too much." I said, "I told you last week what the price was and you didn't think it was too much.' So, what are you going to do? Stiff me just because you can get them in town for 99 cents a pound?" He said, "Well, I think $1.70 a pound is too much." I said, "I think I understand how you feel. You are looking for the Basement prices at Macy's and instead, you've found yourself on the top floor of Macey's. Bargins are for the hopelss and the destitute and you won't find any here. G'Day Sir."

I suppose you can tell I was angry. LOL

I have since printed two posters. One says, "NO SMOKING" and the other one says,
"Only Quality Products are sold here at Quality Prices. Bargin Hunters are welcome to brouse however."

I forgot to add...I have a drawer next to where I stand and in that drawer, I keep "fake" SOLD tags. They have, "J.B.C. SOLD" writen on them. The JBC means, "just be cause" Anyway, when I get the feeling that someone is backing out or down, I grab one of those tags and walk over to where the customer is standing and as they tell me they don't want it or complain that it's too expensive, I remove the tag that had their name on it and replace it with one of those tags. Letting them know, it makes little difference to me, at that point, what they do and it lets them know that in case they find those "Bargins" aren't as good as they thought, they missed out completely as they saw me mark it SOLD to someone else. They won't do it a second time.
