I have germinated the (edible) chestnuts found in the supermarket here in Newfoundland. I have one tree from that experiment and I am repeating the experiment with 20 nuts in soil in deep pots... I bought some nuts showing shoots, some not. The shoots were touched black as if frosted, but appear to be greening up in my cold basement window. I read somewhere that true chestnut trees need a mate... for nut production. How do I identify the type of chestnut that I have?? I also question whether the nuts are 'nuked' sometimes to prevent germination.
