I obviously planted this last year and have no idea what it is. I have looked in books and cannot find it. It looks like a geranium by the leaves, a bit. They are little yellow flowers that fall off at night and more bloom the next day.

Could it be geum, helianthemum or cistus? It's hard to tell!

None of those sounds familiar to me, except the Geum , of I planted a Mrs. Bradshaw about 3 years ago and it never came back. It was orange and about 7 feet from this.

Looks like Potentilla recta. Go here for a pic...http://www.ct-botanical-society.org/galleries/potentillarect.html

This is apparently a noxious weed in some areas.

I went to the link and I think that is it. The seed pods look exactly the same and so do the leaves. I sure do not remember planting it!!! Thank you for your help. This has been bugging me all summer. These plants sure have lots of seeds in those pods!!!

You probably wouldn't have planted it, it's really considered a weed and a noxious one at that in some areas.
