OH I cannot believe this question I just went to a friend's house and he had a huge wood burner in his yard that heated his entire (enourmous) house. Said fills it once a day and that is it. Some kind of underground water pipe that runs from the stove to the house I will try to get a hold of him to ask more!

I know LizH in Boone has one her husband installed. It also heats her greenhouse (all with water pipes).

several of our neighbors have them - electric company called them and wanted to come out and check their meters= their bill was only $14 dollars for a month. They all love them, but ya gotta have a wood source to make it beneficial. Up front cost is pricey too

Yep, sarv, that upfront cost (and the installation) has always shied me away from them. However, I sure would like one! Friends of mine have one (several friends) and they heat their house, their hot water, and one of them also heats his shop from the same wood burner.

Although you need wood to burn they also say you can pretty much supplement it with nearly anything once your winter fire is going good. They throw in most of their kitchen trash, limbs, branches, old lumber, etc.

Blowers and timers are also hooked up to them. Sure sounds ideal, eh? As long as someone is able-bodied enought to load them up they sure seem to have a nice benefit. The only negative I've ever heard about them is that improper placement can be a pain, mainly due to how much they smoke when damped down. A friend of mine who lived next door to an outdoor wood burner said she couldn't open her windows on a nice day cus the smoke would flow directly into her house.

We have an outside wood furnace.,it is large enough that we are heating our house, the greenhouse and soon going to be heating our garage and our hot water. We fill it only half full and it lasts about 13 hrs. we keep our house at 72 in the day time and 66 at night. .
The neighbor that is having all the smoke problems should ask her neighbor to make the smoke stack taller ours is about 8 ft and it is sitting 45 ft. from our house and we have not had any problems with smoke.
We used to have to fill our propane tank 3 or 4 times a year , we are still on the first fill this year. We live in Northern Michigan

Has anyone heard anything about that new indoor/outdoor wood furnace -- Greenwood? The website ([HYPERLINK@www.greenwoodfurnace.com]) talks about little/no smoke and high efficiency. I would appreciate any insight! Thanks! wp

Looks interesting. I've been contemplating such a system but haven't had time to do much research.
