Well, we THOUGHT we had taken several precautions so that our two 100 lb "puppies" wouldn't be romping the neighborhood. After all, they have nearly 5 acres of chainlinked sand to chase rabbits in, and a kennel with nearly as much square footage of my house. There's serveral gates that have to be negotiated before you can get on to the dirt road... But mix a 14 year old boy's forgetfulness with the persistance of 2 determined dogs, and low and behold, I get a call at work that there were two dogs terrorizing the neighbor's cattle. Good thing my truck has a lead foot - 80 mph home - and THANK YOU for not shooting my dogs, though we certainly deserved to have lost them that way! By the time I arrived home an hour later, they were sitting in their kennel, all the doors and gates wide open, acting like nothing had happened, and why WAS I home so early in the day? Well, no point yelling at them now - like little kids, if you don't catch them in the act, they just don't get it. (But you can be sure The Boy got a good yelling at!) Locked all the gates, gave the dogs some fresh water and a dirty look, and started back to work. At which point I called my boss and explained that yes, the kid is fine (well, he would live until he got home from school, anyway!), and that the reason why I had lit outa work like a crazed woman was because my dogs were in the neighbor's pasture. She and my coworkers all got a good laugh, but I know they were thinking that was a pretty lame excuse to take a long lunch.
