A friend wrote in her Christmas note,
By the way, I only have a few hostas but one of them attracts lots of comment - an Elephant hosta - it is HUGE!!!
The best I can find in searching for this is "Elephant Burgers" which doesn't appear to be large enough to fit the "huge" description. Does anyone have an idea what variety it could be? Is there one that has attracted a popular name of "Elephant Hosta"?

Are you sure it isn't elephant ears??? Where does she live?

I found Elephant Burgers too in hosta library http://www.hostalibrary.org/e/e.html

Better get in touch with her and see what she has. We NEED to know. LOL

My friend lives in Kitchener, ON - a bit west of Toronto. She replied,
Mine may be Elephant Burgers Hosta but it is hard to tell from your photo. It has solid colour leaves but much brighter - bright yellowish green. It stands about 2.5 to 3 feet high with blooms that have stems 3 to 4 feet long. The leaves are 10' to 12"wide. I'll send you a photo in the summer with an indication as to size. I checked the plantscaper's blueprint of our garden and she just called it Large Specimen Hosta. It sits in full sun too which may account for the size.
The picture she refers to is the one on the Hosta library for Elephant Burgers.

I'm not a large hosta specialist - don't have the space. So, for those that are, what are some cultivars which would fit her description?

Maybe Sum & Substance?

I guess I should ask her what color the flowers are.

My friend write:
The flowers are the same colour as my other smaller hostas - a white with purple tinges - I think. I really don't pay that much attention.
I've started with Budd Gardens' list of really big hostas and searched them through the Hosta Library to eliminate many. this is what I have left. Haven't yet had time to search them through DG plant files as well. What are your thoughts?

My goodness, you have been busy. What we need is a picture of your friend's hosta. Really hard to identify from a description. And if you give pictures like I do, you can make it quite a challenge for the group to ID as well. LOL (shush Kelly)

ViolaAnn: If it is light green I will bet money on a Sum and Substance. That is suppose to be the biggest hosta of all. But it is in the eyes of the beholder and the setting it is in. I have a hosta that appears to be a lot bigger than my Sum and Substance. It is a Blue Angel and that is a giant hosta itself but it is not the size of a Sum and Substance. But setting on a incline above other mature medium hosta it looks like it is bigger than anything I got.

That's what I'm thinking as well. It fits the description and it's well known; so likely to be used by a garden designer.

I thought I would send her a list of links and let her take a look as well.

Ann

My first thought from your original discription was S & S, so looks like it's almost unanamous!

And this one is common- spectacular- but common enough. Hers is not in full swing yet- I had leaves 19" x15"!

Hi Susan,

Missed you too,,and all my other DG pals,,my STUPID puter wouldn't turn on,,,explained it all in coffee and...,,,didn't even try to catch up on both days worth of posts,,,just skimmed,,,hope the little baby is feeling better?

You'd have thought I was going through withdrawals,,,well,,truth be told,,,I was,,,LOL

Tonight when I got puter back,,,first thing Bill said was,,,"You got a lot of catching up to do",,,kinda sarcastically,,,I LOL and said "You bet I do",,,he just laughed,,,he was so happy that it didn't work for 2 days,,,When it wouldn't come on,,,the first thing I thought was that he did something to it,,,I even asked him what he did,,,'cause he's always threatening to do something,,,he thinks I spend way too much time on DG,,, He swore he didn't do anything,,,it took awhile before I believed him,,,ROFLOL

Glad to be back,
Kelly

Hi folks,

My friend sent a picture. I'm still betting on S & S. She said in her message, "For perspective, remember that I am 5ft 10" tall, so it's a big one."

Do you agree?

Looks like Sum & Substance to me too. My that's a big clump. If she were to lay down in front of it, I bet it would be almost as wide as she is tall! How long has she had it?
