I admit to being a little bit slow in the holiday spirit this year. My DD was away in France and I just didn't get into the 'mood' until she got home. No one felt like getting a Christmas tree without her, and by the time she got home and settled in, Christmas was just around the corner - like the next day! My son had been talking about making a Christmas Cave, and he had a certain vision of it, so when neither kid really wanted to go cut a tree, but both wanted to try the 'cave' idea, I said 'Go for it', just clean up after yourselves!
This is what they came up with! We liked it so much that it will probably be a Christmas tradition. Trees are getting to be mighty expensive up here, and no one will let me put up an artificial tree. This is made from Douglas Fir branches that came down during a winter storm (happens several times a year), and also cedar branches cut from our cedar trees, as well as some from the neighbor's trees that hang across the fence.
The form is made from some very heavy wire fencing that we had laying around. I think at one time I had used it to make a compost bin, then didn't like the way it turned out. They used a plant stand in the middle to give it extra support, then used cable ties to attach the branches to the framework. They added lights, then my DD picked out blown glass ornaments to hang inside. They wanted anything that had reflective surfaces to make the inside extra shiny. They then arranged the gifts inside. Voila! A Christmas Cave! Everyone was very pleased with the results. I hope you enjoy the photos!
