sorry, cant help you. I have a Rival that is old now and has always worked well. May you can contact Rival and have them send you another one? I have always had good luck contacting manufacturers directly.

Debi,
I got one, too, but haven't even opened it yet. My daughter also got one just like it, but I don't know if she has used it yet. Both of ours are the six quart size. My mother used a similar one when we visited last week - I will ask what brand hers is.

I have both a 5-quart & a tiny little Rival, & both have worked great for years. Rival is pretty much a mainstay in the crockpot cookery field.

I suspect that you just received a defective product - which can happen to the best of companies. If you know where the gifter bought it, I'd clean it up & return/exchange it to the store. If not, I'd contact Rival directly about the problem. In this short amount of time you shouldn't have any problem getting a replacement or a refund.

Breezy - sure hope you are right. I am planning to open mine and use it tomorrow just to check it out. Still have the gift receipt just in case.

stownes, i have the one you do. apparently rival has gone down hill in recent years, the old ones are the ones people swear by. do yourself a favor and go to amazon and check out the feedback yours is given-it ain't a pretty sight!!! mine is not a fluke, it seems it is pretty much the norm, sad but true. i don't have a problem contacting the company, but what i want to know is info regarding other brands. it seems it's the programmable ones in most brands that are bad.

Wow - you know, that may be true. Mine are almost 10 years old & definitely not programmable. Just the old-time settings: High, Low, & Off.

Perhaps the newer ones aren't of the same quality. Sorry if I steered you wrong.

Take it back and do what we do - look at yard sales for an older model! Buy what you want with the take back and the older ones last for years, ( we still pick them up when we can for 1-3 bucks each we can cook a whole 5c meal in them if we wanted to I guess by now!)

Hmm...I have a rival crockpot that I got two years ago that I LOVE! It's oval in shape, so it easily holds a chicken or roast. It has removable stoneware for easy cleaning, and it only has three options. Off, low and high. :) Works like a charm and I wouldn't trade it for anything. If I remember right, I paid under $20 for it.

Ours is a 5-quart oval crockpot made by Rival. We got it at Wal-Mart probably 8 years or more ago. Off, warm, low, high settings - that's it. I love it.

debi, I have not heard of the smartpot you mentioned in your beggining post, I'm wondering if it is more of a roasting pot than a crock. My MIL got me an oval shaped Rival with all the temperature settings and I could not figure out why my roast was getting done so fast *blush*. Got a Rival crock recently works nicely. Maridell

I have the small size Rival that I acquired many years ago, and it is as reliable as ever. Last fall I bought a four-quart oval West Bend with an lift-out ceramic bowl and I'm using it a lot. Four settings - hi, low, keep warm and off. Great for cooking a stewing hen and making ham/bean soup. I also cook large batches of whole grains and beans such as brown rice, barley, and garbanzos; then freeze recipe-sized portions to be able to put my favorite casseroles together quickly.

Old thread, but I wanted to respond to trackinsand because I have the same problem with my Rival. It has 4 settings low (8 hrs and 10 hrs) and high (4 hrs and 6 hrs), which seemed to fit my needs. It's about 8 months old and I've only used it 3 times. Both times when I've left it to slow cook all day (low setting, 10 hours), I've left home at 7 am and returned at 5 pm to find it spitting and bubbling almost dry. I don't think that's supposed to happen either. I should have already contacted Rival about it, and reading this forum will probably make me do it.
Thanks for everyone's comments.

I bought my Rival at a garage sale, several years ago for $5.00. I use it frequently and love it. It has just the three settings.
