I gather this is one of the NEW forums where you don't (for now) have to be a subscriber? Will send the link to my daughter who says she needs and organizer.

Ann, that's correct - it's a free forum. And one I desperately need (as I survey what seems to be a sea of countless tubs and boxes of Christmas stuff waiting to go back up in my attic!)

LOL.. I had a HUGE party on the weekend - an open house with about 80 guests. NOTHING does a better job of clearing the decks than a party which takes over the WHOLE house. I NEED to have one each year.

Amen to that! I did the same thing before Christmas - it definitely gave me motivation to get everything "just perfect"! Now of course, I'm suffering the aftermath of the holidays. Argh.

Ditto here - big party on the 23rd, and now boxes of stuff all over the place. Didn't get my tree down until Sunday. Kinda wondering why I am over here because my house seems to be unorganizable

LMBO
MGH: You can always do what I was seriously considering - make it a seasonal tree. Just hang hearts on there, then change to eggs, etc. :-)

Well, it's already becoming a seasonal tree...fire season...well, it's a season in Oregon, that's for sure! LOL It's getting really crispy...I won't let the kids turn the lights on anymore. My DH and I are GOING to take it down today. But first we are gonna go out to lunch! ;-)

Welllllllll, my tree and decorations are down...but only 'cause we were getting new living room furniture and I was terrified that the moving out of the old and moving in of the new would leave something special in little bittie pieces all over the floor.

I have what is euphemistically called a spare bedroom right now that has all kinds of things in it except for a bed :-) When I got married last summer I moved from a modern 3-level townhouse into my DH's 130 year old village home. It has only a partial basement that is barely big enough to hold the things it has to hold, only one very small closet in each of the two bedrooms, one smallish cupboard in the bathroom for bath and bed linens, and no useable attic.

I have to organize that spare room before it drives me crazy! Right now everything is in boxes and totes. Of course none of them are labelled, and they're all stacked on top of each other anyway, so finding a specific anything is out of the question. Things I have to organize from this mess include craft supplies (crochet, knitting, sewing, rug hooking, sketching), board games (dozens of 'em), genealogy materials (yep, I'm watching that area too), music books and supplies, things of my Mom's I saved after she passed away, and things I'm sure I don't even remember 'cause it's been so long since I've actually seen them!

I have three storage units that I'm all set to go with - now I just need to get over that "where do I start" panic and get on with it! Wish me luck.

My large open house is dubbed an "Epiphany" Party. I stumbled on it because I run a food bank and there is absolutely no possibility of finding time to do a party BEFORE Christmas.

The tree came down Saturday evening after the guests had cleared out but only because DH left on a trip to Paris on Sunday.

Couldn't. I play viola in the Ottawa Symphony which has a concert next Monday (changed to be a week earlier than originally scheduled because of our national election). I had rehearsals Sunday and Monday evening and again Saturday afternoon, Sunday afternoon, Sunday evening and Monday noon as well as my regular job.

Good luck, Ginny. Let me know what it is like to have a spare bedroom in stead of a "junk room". :)

Mom! You were supposed to nominate me for one of those come and purge my house, organization TV shows!, not send me links to forums I don't have time to read! :D

Sometimes I think the easiest thing to do would be to trade with someone else's cluttered space. I used to do a bit of house cleaning for people and it was always much easier and faster than cleaning my own house as I get caught up in the stuff, trying to decide what to do with it all.

So anyone up for a trade a room declutter session?

Okay, I'm reporting in on my efforts to declutter my spare room. Which, by the way, is destined to be "my" room - for crafts, sewing, garden design and planning, etc. It is not ever going to be a so-called bedroom again.

We have success!

I finally just took everything out of the room and moved it right into the middle of the living room floor (and on the couch, chair, extra chair...). That way I had a nice empty room to begin with, and no way could I just give up in disgust and walk away from it since we couldn't even move in the LR at this point :-) I set up the three storage units and then went out to the living room and opened each and every box and tote so I could see what their contents were.

Then I started loading the bottom shelf of one storage unit, placing related items together, not putting the next shelf in position until I had that one filled and knew how high the next one needed to be. I followed the same pattern for each shelf of each storage unit - starting at the bottom and working my way to the top.

I need one more small storage unit to finish the job properly, but boy oh boy - I can actually move around in the room, open drawers without moving ten boxes first, and find things when I want them instead of finally running across them two months later when I'm looking for something altogether different.

The best part though is that getting this job done was an instant stress reliever. Before, every time I passed by that room I could feel myself getting tense. I really don't like clutter at all and it drove me crazy. Now I can relax again.

LOL Sounds kinda like a "Clutter Bugs Anonymous" meeting doesn't it? "Hi. My name's Ginny, and I'm a clutter bug. (Hi Ginny!) But I feel so much better about myself now that I've finally found the courage to tackle the beast! ..." So, do I get my "one room" chip now? :-)

Have a great day everyone - I know I'm going to! --Ginny

Congrats to you!
I too have to clean out my spare room..and filing cabinet.
I started on the filing cabinet last week. I bought a shredder and that made it seem like more fun..
I keep thinking about the all the mementos that seemed to be important to keep..receipts that are for things I bought ten and fifteen years ago..and decided who really cares. I purged years of paystubs..
old hydro bills etc.

I am a packrat..I confess..and keep thinking maybe I will need that one day..but I want to change that. This forum is helping inspire me.

Thanks,
Carol

Thank you!!!! Thank you!!!
Bowing here... LOL
I stopped on the way home from work and bought two three drawer clear rolling bins. I'm going to put wrapping papper..bows...computer paper and craft items in them...and whatever else I come across. They will fit nicely in the closet in the spare room.
I also bought a nice small three drawer caddy for pencil crayons, markers, stickers and the like for my grandaughters to use when they are here.
Tomorrow I will get organized..but for now I will read this forum for more inspiration. I'm tired.

Cheers,
Carol

This is too funny! I cleaned out my bedroom closet last week. It was waaay overdue, and when my DH got home he walked into the kitchen after changing his clothes, and said "Babe, I DIDN'T know we have a "Walkin Closet"!!! It is really nice to get somethings accomplished isn't it! I took on the dining room table today and got that one done too...I think I am on a roll. I HATE clutter, and it is all around me...arghhhh!
