Can an over the stove microwave filter air or must it be vented? I'd love to have one but the stove is on an interior wall with no way to vent it.

Ours is vented and it is on an interior wall, too. It has a pipe that goes up through the attic. Ours died a while ago and we just bought another one on eBay. It isn't installed yet.. Hopefully now that the holidays are over we'll have time to do that SOON! We bought a little one to use in the meantime, but I really want my counter space back!!

(leafing through the manual that came with the microwave...) Aha! You can get models with charcoal filters that will recirculate the air back into the room if it isn't vented to the outside. :-) So the answer is yes, you just have to choose the right model.

Thanks Marylyn, I remember how hard it was to feed the electric wires, I can't imagine going through three stories of this old house trying to install a vent so I'm glad to hear about the filter. We have an appointment Friday for final order on the new cabinets so I need to make final decisions.

Oh, yeah.. that would be a real pain with 3 stories!!! We have a GE Profile SpacemakerXL microwave. The one that came with the house was great (!!!), so when it died we bought another one. We couldn't afford a brand new one, so hopefully this one we got on eBay will work for quite a while. :-) Now we just need to find a free hour or six to get it installed.

P.S. What kind of cabinets are you getting? :-)

It's always good to get a recommendation on a brand, thanks. Lets hope the installation goes well for you.
We have oak built ins with the original finish that will stay in the kitchen so we need something that will look good with them. I'm planning on Shaker cabinets in white painted birch , no fake wood for my old house, and glass upper doors. For counters we'll have laminate, Formica Labrador Granite in the honed finish on both the new and old cabinets.

This picture shows just how small the new part of the kitchen is. only three base cabinets with a chimney in the corner just to make things difficult.

Oooo... That's gorgeous!! We have solid oak cabinets in the kitchen and guest bathroom that the original owner built. They are nice, too, but not nearly as fancy as yours. :-) Thanks for posting the pictures!!!

Thanks Marylyn and Dea. I love the wood in this house. Luckily only one bathroom has been painted, the rest of the finish is original. You can't tell from the pictures just how poor quality the cabinets we're replacing are, and it will be nice to having upper cabinets. The one I put in is so shallow it doesn't hold much. Before that there wasn't any place to store glasses by the sink. I will miss the pot rack, it's just so practical, but that's a small price to have doors and drawers that open and close right.

Wow, what gorgeous cabinets! Ever do tours of that gorgeous house? I can imagine the rest must be beautiful, too, with as much care as went into the cabinets.

Just thought I would pop over here and look through the threads already posted here before I post our little before and after. Mao, we just bought an over the range microwave and the salesman told us that most of them these days can vent either way. You just have to make sure you set it up to vent the way you want it to before you put it up because they usually come from the factory set up to vent through themselves.

You have some gorgeous cabinetry in your house!

If you can vent it out, that's the way to go. From personal experience, I can tell you it's no fun having all the hot air and steam vented right above your head back into the room. When we have the funds, we're going to have a vent put in, like we should have in the first place.
