Sounds like a terrific idea Dave! Lots of new folks showing up, they may feel a bit like the new kid in school.

I think everyone ought to introduce themselves...new or not. Make it feel like home much sooner.

Guess I will jump in here. I am new, having found this place from a reference on another forum.
Been too busy fixing up my home to have much time for gardening, but I hope to rectify that situation this year. There is a lot of ground cover in my yard, and I think it is time to change that a bit. I look forward to learning a lot here.

I found this sight because I was looking for an english hawthorn tree. I have
high blood pressure and I use hawthorn berry tea to regulate it. I was hoping to grow my own berries. I noticed some of you have been here a long time.
I know this will be a very interesting place. Is there a chat room kind of place?
Or is this the only way to talk to each other? Well, I hope to make a few new friends here. I also noticed that in your "area" forums, you don't have a southeast area. Is there a way to get one put in? Or can we just kind of talk about it anyway? Well, since I'm new here, I'll stop with the questions, for now. Talk soon. Keli

Hello, I am new to Dave's Garden, also.

I am a first time new home owner, and I am going in too many directions at once!

I am determined to get my yard started this spring, but at the same time I am trying to get my house organized and some internal projects accomplished.
Projects like building corner shelves in the kitchen, building a kitty highway and steps in the living room, building a window seat with storage in the living room, etc, etc, etc...

I am so happy to be able to do what ever I want, (after a life time of renting) that even if my building projects don't turn out perfect, that is ok, I will learn as I go. :-) Janice.

Hi, I am new here, but already am very impressed with the gardening/botanical knowledge that I have found here. I grow bedding plant annuals for a living-wholesale, and found this site when I was googling care of alocasias and colocasias because I had gotten an order to grow some for a landscaper. Had never grown them before. As well, I used to live in Hawaii for 10 yrs, and really miss all the tropicals that you take for granted there, so you know that I read the tropicals page everyday! I was also a member of the International Palm Society while in Hawaii, as the palm is my very favorite plant, and so I can hang out with the palms here!

Hi. I ran across this site looking for info on growing hops. I have some started and want to train them to grow a living pergola. I have never grown anything, but put these in soil 4 years ago and they are thriving. Didn't do anything else. Never even watered them. I would like to grow other things also but need lots of help, as I have never even kept house plants alive (except for one palm). My x did all the gardening before. Now it is my time I think. Please help me. Thanks.

Hi, skipjob! Welcome to Dave's Garden! The Upper Midwest Gardening Forum ([HYPERLINK@davesgarden.com]) might be a great place for you to start. You will find lots of other gardeners there who live with growing conditions like yours and will be able to suggest plants that do well there. I find the "Boy, am I sorry I planted THAT" threads to be just as helpful as the threads that show pretty flowers.

If you want ideas of what to plant, the Garden Tours forum might be helpful. ([HYPERLINK@davesgarden.com]) Members have posted pictures of their gardens for you to look at and discuss.

There are a whole host of other forums, some of them general, like Garden Talk, and some more specific, like Begonias. Here is the whole list of gardening forums: [HYPERLINK@davesgarden.com]

You'll find friendly helpful people, for the most part, in any and all of them. If you have a question and don't know exactly where to post it, Garden Talk is a good place to start. Someone there will be able to redirect you. ([HYPERLINK@davesgarden.com])

I hope that helps! Welcome, again, to Dave's Garden!

I came across this site many times while researching plants. We didn't have email set up, so I didn't think I'd ever get to join. We got the bugs out of the mail and I subscribed. I love it here! Only a few people in my town have large flower beds, so it's nice to know I have all of you to ''talk'' to.

Hi, I am new here today. Just found the site while searching for a company on Google, and a Gardenwatchdog reply about it was there (Van Bourgondien's). So I read all the reviews and got hooked. I just moved to central Pennsylvania (Happy Valley) from NW Ohio and miss my English cottage garden of 9 years and conservatory back there...but here I have a bit more shade (tall hardwoods at the back) and rhodos seem to grow here really well, not like there. So my gardening will change somewhat. We have a lot of yellow clay at the surface and some small rocks. Any suggestions?

Hi everyone! I joined DG about a month ago and can't remeber where I figured I fit in... Oh well, I just got married in Jan for the 2nd time and now getting ready for a reception/barbecue. At least my roses are blooming.
I'm new at gardening, only been here in this house 2 years.
Everywhere else I've ever lived had exsisting flowers so just needed to take a little care. When we moved in here in June of 2004, there was not one single flower! Nada! Not one! Some ugly globe bushes and 5 trees that were alive and 3 trees that were d-e-d dead. Since I've put in a total for 10 garden beds. One the first year, 3 last year in the spring, two lattice beds last fall and the rest this spring. Everything seems to be coming along nicely. Only time will tell I guess. Any helpful hints and suggestions would be so greatly appreciated. Thanks. Cece zone 5a Wi

Hi! Does anyone have an idea how to keep squirrels out of my potted pansies? I've tried pepper spray, liquid fence and scare tactics and every morning I get up and they're dug up on my patio. I just want them in the container, blooming. Not withering away on the cement all night. Frustrating!!!!!!!

I think I found out. I looked up on [HYPERLINK@www.ortho.com] and it looks to me it could be leafminers. So I sprayed the with a rose and flower insect spray. Hopefully that will make them go away. before they do any noticeable damage that is. Thanks for the tip though. I should try DG's before I stop bugging people with all my questions.

Maybe ya'll down home can tell me where Humble Texas could be found? We play buzztime trivia every friday night and Sunday afternoon and Mulligans in Humble Texas is ALWAYS on the national list with high points. Just wonderin' where humble is. I tried asking my uncle who lives in Gustine and he said he never heard of it so it must be down near the border of Mexico somewhere. Always my uncles response.

Humble is just northeast of Houston, nowhere near the Mexican border. :-) The natives drop the "H" and pronounce it "Umble." I have no clue why. LOL

Thanks for the info. Its crazy, the bartender says Humble is on the national list of top 20 about 5 days a week. Always on Friday nights and always on Sunday mornings. Wed, Thur and Saturdays too. They must sit with lap tops to anwser some of those questions or they are very old.
I just thought it was interesting. I keep joking with DH that I will get Mulligns phone number and call down and play trivia via phone with their players. They always know more. with 13 and 1/2 14 thousand points. I was curious and thanks for helping me out.

That would be fun. I love to play trivia as long as DH is with me. His guesses are always better than mine and some of this stuff is like 16,17,18th century stuff. I'm lucky I can remember last week at times. I'm only 50, but you can only cram so much stuff in the ole noodle then it starts leaking out all over and you end up where you CRS ya know?

Hello
I live in southeastern PA and have a few questions to field to the house. I planted several tomato plants and only one is stunted and has leaves that are turned inward. There is a tomato on it but the other plants, planted at the same time, that are at least 2 feet taller than this one. Also, I live in a subdivision of new homes where the land was an old cornfield. So when the lawn was seeded over topsoil that was spread, most of the soil was washed away and now I am left with clay in areas where the grass did not take. Anything I can do to recondition the soil? Also, does any one know just what I need to do to make my hydrangeas turn blue?
Thank you.
Great website, Dave!

Hello greenthumbnPA,
Sorry no idea about the tomatos. Not much of a vegatable gardener. I have a hydrangea that when I bought it there was blue flowers, now they are turning pink. I asked on a radio talk show and was told I needed acid in the soil, that it was too alkaline. So as soon as the stores open I am heading for Steins to see what I can get there. I want blue, if i'd wanted pink I'd have bought pink. Our soil is pretty much clay about 10 inches down then sand. All I did was amend them with compost manure. I've put in 10 beds in 2 years and amended each and so far my flowers and shrubs are thriving quite nicely so I must have done something right. Hope that helps

Marylyn_TX I'm 50 and I popped my cork with gray matter sliding out a loooooooong time ago. CRS is a real problen for me especially in trivia LOL DH said I should see if I could get you to send Mulligans phone number, then we can call them some Sunday from Sporties and see whats what. Might be fun Would it be a possibility to obtain a phone number from you for Mulligans in Humble????? Thanks before hand

Thanks Marylyn for the number. We will have a hoot with this. Just hope the good ole folks in Humble will think its just as fun. Rain didn't last long. Went to steins for more bug be gone and came home with 3 Rudbeckia 'Irish Eyes' and 3 Rudbeckia 'Indian Summer'. DH wasn't happy at first but when I sang Irish Eyes are Smiling he laughed instead of complained. Guess I must not sing too well LOL Also bought a flat of Cosmos because the 5 plants I have are so pretty that I just had to have more. Steins garden center just l0ves it when I pull in their lot. A few of them know me by name and know I ain't leaving without at least 110.00 worth of stuff I have no room for. (Well I have the room just DH not parting with his lawn soo easily) LOL I'll have the back yard filled in in no time with paths instead of lawn. Still working on the pond and waterfall but that will take a few more years. Maybe by the time I'm 55, He's rolling his eyes at me (he hates it when I'm on the computer when he's home) so I guess I'll say bye to all for now~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Cherie
