I made a mobile earlier this year using shrink paper and pictures of butterflies that I printed on the paper and then baked. I think it turned out fairly nice since it was my first attempt. I also made little butterfly brooches using the same type of paper and my ink jet printer.

I purchased my computer craft supplies from http://edps.com/ Their prices are reasonable. I don't believe I've ever seen it at an office supply store.

MzMunchken,

Thanks for the pictures. They look great. I want to make a name tag holder. First make a brooch (I was thinking of a flower.) then glue a key ring to it so you can clip your name tag to it. Do you think the idea will work? Did you use hot glue to glue the pin to the butterfly?

Also, was there much of an odor when you baked the shrink paper? My husband is sensitive to odors - some of them make his face turn red and messes up his sinuses.

Thanks, txflowerlady

to make a name badge I would make sure that the pin is based as high as possible on the flower so that the weight of the keyring and tag holder doesn't pull the flower downward. And yes, hot glue gun did the trick. I bought the pins at Michaels in a bag of 25.. they have several sizes of pins to choose from.

As far as smell.. there is a very faint odor but it only last a minute or two. You bake them in your oven for less than 2 minutes.. when they first start to heat up they will curl up on themselves.. don't freak.. then they will slowly unfurl and lay flat. Some of the very thin cuts had to have a little help in flattening out but that can be done by using a toothpick and forcing it down while it is still hot. Another key thing is that you don't want to use real dark colors.. tone down your colors as they will get very dark once baked. You can see that in the picture above with the blue butterfly before and after.

MzMunchken,

Hobby Lobby has something called Shrinky Dink that I am going to check out. Am I correct in assuming that I need to make sure I can print on it with my inkjet printer? Thanks for all of your helpful hints. I will post a picture of my brooch/name tag holder when I get it finished.

txflowerlady.. I've looked all over at Shrinky Dink paper and no where was I able to see that you could use an inkjet printer to make them. I don't know if the paper I got was a special type just for inkjet printing or not. Sorry, I couldn't help.

At Hobby Lobby I found some Ink Jet Shrink Flim by Grafix. I can't wait to try it. I with you, from what I could tell the Shrinky Dink is not for inkjet printers.

MzMunchken,

What happened? The ink looks all smeared and the surface is bumpy. Did I leave them in the oven too long? The heart doesn't look half bad - I might imbellish it some. I want to use it tomorrow - all I have to do is find my name tag.

The flower is really bad and if you use your imagination you can make out the turtles on the green one. It is sorta funky looking. It is supposed to rectangle. Also, I should have made them a little larger. Back to the drawing board.

The paper has a right and wrong side. I am certain that I used the correct side, because I accidentally used the wrong side and the ink wouldn't even adhere to it. I'm going to call them tomorrow. I'll let you know what they say.

I called them and the lady said that it was a bad batch and she is sending me a replacement package via Fed-Ex. I should get it the early part of next week.

Thanks for all of your help.

The mobile's gorgeous, MzM!

I have a package of shrink film, just haven't tried anything with it yet. I was thinking of making dog tags for our two pups. Now I also want to make a mobile thanks to you. It would be fun to make ceiling fan pulls with them, too.

First time here, hope someone can help!!
I have a boatload of shrink art plastic... the kind you have to use markers etc on... I used to do earrings and pins and such for craft shows. Is there anyone out there who knows if there is something I can apply to it to make it injet compatable?? That would save ooohhhhhh soooo much time!!!!

I'd try using your printer's transparancy setting in its driver. The worst that will likely happen is the ink will smear.

yes, I have tried it in my printer, and it smears... bummer...guess I'll have to go back to the "old fashioned" way of doing it... takes way much more time and really messes with my carpal tunnel...
I'm hopin to figure out something new and different to do with it, but nothing has come to me yet!!

Oh! I just happened to stumble on to this forum ! I am so inspired. I love your mobile. I am going to order some and start making some projects along with the brooche too.

Mzmunchikin-- Did you use "WHITE" ore "Clear" on your both of your projects? I see what looks like u used the white paper on the brooches if I am correct. Can you color on the under side of the paper ? or is it transparent that the print show through after baking? So the mobile with have color on both sides?

I made some dog tags using the shrink film I bought on clearance. They turned out pretty neat, but they weren't strong enough to last without breaking where the holes were punched; they broke after the girls had them on about four days, I think. I'm going to try some with permanent markers next, but I have a few projects to do before I play with those again.

Shrinky Dinks can also be found at Hobby Lobby. Also did you know you can use clear containers from salad bars, delis, and grocery stores? Just look for a “6” inside the recycling arrows. It works, I tried it. If you want to have a hole for hanging just make sure it is a pretty big one or it will close up on you. Here is a link to a site that tells you how to do it.

Looks pretty straightforward...bend a piece of copper tubing into a spiral and tie the butterflies to it with fishing line. The directions for how to use the shrinking film are in the links posted throughout the thread. Take a stab at it! :)
