Has anyone in Zone 8 had good luck with climbing hydrangea (Hydrangea anomale petiolaris)? I planted one in flitered shade under a Loblolly Pine over two years ago and it's still alive, but has never really leafed out. One stem has clung to the tree, it's formed some new stems, but the leaf buds never seem to open. I dug and potted it up in rich mix and moved to a shadier site. Should I just give up and give it to my daughter in Zone 7? (along with the peony and lilac, my other Zone Denial experiments)
