Looks like you have really wrestled a lot of rock over the span of building your pathways. The stone stairs are particularilly nice. Are the rocks glacial erratics?

I'm don't really know much about rocks, I just like them in my yard. I've never heard the term glacial erratic, but I think that's probably what they are. There is a lot of limestone in this area, but my rocks are not limestone. The rocks I have come from farm fields and I assume they were deposited all around the area by glaciers. There are rock piles in all the farms around here that farmers have picked from their fields. They're usually glad to let me have as many as I want.

From your description of obtaining the raw rock, it sounds like they're what is termed 'glacial erractics'. The farmers down here similarily gathered rock and usually cached it in piles at edges of their tillable ground. Just southeast of where I live in central Illinois a glacier stopped and formed the Shelbyville Moraine. The farmed fields in that area often have had the piles of erractics. Like you, the bedrock here is sedimentary limestone while the erractics were transorted by glacier express from metamorphic orgins in Canada.

You have a beautiful spot there. Love the rocks! I've been stewing about having some rocks put in front of the house along the walkway to the door.

What's to stew about? Do it! The only thing I usually stew about regarding rocks, is how do I get more or how do I get bigger rocks.

Rock on.

LOL - The bed that I want them for has been on my "re-do" list for a few years but I just haven't gotten to it. This year I'm planning on adding curves and space to the front planting bed, which is adjacent to where I want the rocks. Guess I'll have to finally get it done this year.
