I came here to ask a question but found this link and I thought you might want to see it as well all you need to know about Caulk. [HYPERLINK@www.factsfacts.com]
I started spring cleaning today and I tackled the master bath I noticed it needed some chaulking on the outside of the tub and floor line. My question was since it had white before could I use the clear Silicone over it? (since I had that already) |

I think you're supposed to remove the old caulk first, otherwise you don't get a good seal. I used the silicone caulk in my guest bathroom, but won't use it again--it works fine, but since you can see through it, you can see the little crack between the tub and the tile and it ends up looking like you don't have caulk on the tub even though you do. So if you like how your tub looks when all the caulk is removed, then go ahead and use the clear stuff, but if seeing the cracks that you're trying to seal would bother you then use the white stuff. |

ecrane3 is right on all counts.
Remove all loose old caulk and clean the area thoroughly.
Silicon caulk comes in many colors, get one that matches and won't stand out.

I know this is an old thread but ...
I tried the silicone caulks and they won't adhere to my fiberglass tub/shower .
The latex adhesive type adheres but then shrinks and eventually cracks.
I have thought of caulking with the latex first and the puting a layer of the silicone over it as protection from cracking.
any ideas????

I also have a fiberglass shower and I've never had trouble with silicone caulk. Did you make sure the old caulk was completely removed and the area was thoroughly cleaned before you started? And the latex caulk should last a while before it starts to crack. |

The latex lasts about a year before it is a 'goner'.
It is made for tubs and showers but I am really dissaponited in its longevity.
and yes I did remove old caulk, clean dry etc. before using the silicone stuff.
Guessing I might have to find adifferent brand, the ones I have does say
adherence to fiberglass is only a 3 out out of 10. Not very good.

I think I found the solution...
The local Ace hardware had a better selection of caulks than Home Depot or Lowes.
One is a Latex/Silicone mix with far better adhesive rating the the latex only.
It is rated as 'outdoor waterproof ' so it should survive the bathroom easily.
I'll let you know in a year or two. :)
