I have an old mature holly hedge that came with my house when I bought it. It looks ok on the outside, but on the inside its just a skeleton. The hedge is about15 years old. Does Holly have a discernable lifespan? Has anyone here ever severely pruned a mature hedge like this? Is there a preferred method of doing this?

I'd like to cut it within 6 inches of the ground. After doing some research I found out the correct way of pruning so this doesn't happen again.

Thanks!
