At least it's an oldie. My friend's family calls it 'Valentine Bunch Bean', so I'm assuming it's a bush snap bean, but it's brown seeded and I can't find anything quite fitting that description called 'Valentine'.
My friend's grandpa had been growing it in Madison County, NC since he was twelve and his son, my friend's dad, has carried on the tradition. Since her grandpa was born in 1912, that means its been in the family for 82 years!
I'm finding 'Black Valentine' and 'Red Valentine', but the only brown seeded Valentine I can find is a 'Buff Valentine', a.k.a. 'Contender' that was introduced in 1949 by the SC/AES, "Possibly derived from pre-1855 'Early Valentine'". Is 'Early Valentine' brown seeded, or do we have something else here? She'll try to get me some seeds this weekend.
They've already lost a white seeded bean that her grandpa grew. If this is unique, we'll make sure it's preserved. |
