Any suggestions on how to create a suitable firepit? Plan to use it for informal gatherings, toasting marshmellows with the kids for smores & relaxation. Nothing huge, but not small either. Safety is my major concern.

Safety first - look to the area that you want to have the fire pit located and note if there are any low hanging tree branches that could catch a flying ember and catch on fire.

As a precaution we alway run a water line out to the area where we install fire pits.

check your county code. here in my neck of the woods we can no longer build wood burning fire pits , they have to be gas . This code compliance issue can be side stepped if you do not 'build' your fire pit , ,,,meaning that you 'purchase' one of those movable ones.

After safety concerns are addressed , look at what your budget is.
Often times budget will determine the materials that you will build with.

After budget is considered look to your surrounding enviroment to analysize what style of fire pit would flow together well with your existing surroundings.
- example - if the fire pit is located near your house and your house is a formal style red brick building then a red brick firepit would work in harmony with your surrounding context.

Sunset Publishers have a good little paperback book on building firepits. I believe the title of the book is Building BBQ's & Outdoor Kitchens.

Thanks,
we are almost finished.
A lovely heavy timber redwood arbor has since been installed over the bbq cooking area . It provides us with a little bit of shade but more importantly it gives us an area to hang two bronze pendant light fixtures from that will softly illuminate the cooking/ food prep area.

I found two moderately sized red Japanese maple trees ( Acer Emperor Red ) to be planted behind the circular sitting area and another at the far end of the deck that is not seen in these photos.
The rest of the planting scheme is based on rusty reds, maroons and a pinch of orange and yellow flowers.
Tall Canna Tropicana will be planted behind the wall , with two Phormium Dazzlers on either end of the deck that opens up to the lawn.
Succulents, Brugmansia Charles Grimaldi , yellow lantana and dark rusty red tall Anigozanthus ( kangaroo paws ) will finish up the planting scheme.

Teak and metal furnishings with red and oatmeal colored cushions and pillows will finish off the details.

Deviant_deziner - I have just bult a fire pit similar to yours and it runs on propane. What do you put in the pit itself aside from the fire ring? Do you fill it with sand or fake logs or anything? THanks!

fake frogs or logs and coarse sand and some larger grit gravel.

I think the fake frogs are politically incorrect so now it is just plain old faux logs.

It's a little boring being P.C. but what the heck.
just glad is wasn't fake dogs... as in hot dogs.
