Hi! Well, it's been a busy summer! I've posted an update on the woodland garden - the July version. It's coming along nicely, but I'm taking my time, too. I love to work out there in these dog days of summer - I swear it's about 10 degrees cooler back there. Hope you enjoy! - Dax

Thanks for looking - around DG's there is so much beauty, it's a joy! How ya doing Corgimom? It's hard for me to get anything done during the week - gotta go to work, and that means nights sometimes. So don't know when I'll get back to the diary. I also have a daughter gettin ready for her wedding - and guess which gets the higher piority? You bet!! What fun! Anyway, I'll keep pluggin at it here and there.

Hey, Zenpotter - thanks for your kind words. You just never know how people will feel about memorial gardens. For me they keep my loved ones close - I'm one of those who believes you never really lose them, they're always with you, just inside. But I know that can be pretty schmaltzy for some folks. For me it is peace and love - I swear the plants in those gardens grow better than others!!

Talk to you soon - Zen, haven't had a chance to look yet, but I've seen Corgi's tour. I'll go look for yours now!

I just saw him, and his family last Friday. Was happy since I hadn't seen him for about two months. He came through with six other deer. It looked like three moms and four yearlings and so I think he has been adopted! It was dusk, they stopped for their cracked corn, and headed up through the meadow to the deer lick I have up there. I've found that helps to keep them on their route and not stop off to lop off my tulips! I'll be posting new pics from 2006 within the next month or two - thanks for your nice comments! Dax

Anyway, I'm just beginning to get started for this year, and since I'm retiring will be able to baby these beds and even start some new. I'd love to see your gardens, also, since I know I have much to learn - do you have a tour? It sounds as though we have much in common - I'll go check and see - Dax

I was having trouble too, so I took yestersay off. Congratulations on your upcoming retirement! You will have so much to look at every day. I have a tiny yard compared to most of you, and I weeded a lot of duplicates out to make room for some new things. One of the people who took some of plants last year, stopped by to tell me they are all coming up. I was glad to hear that. My daughter finally got us hooked up to a scanner, and I hope to buy her old digital camera. Any picture I submit is from film. I did finally get my photo posted on my home page tho. I want to try a black and white of my german shepard that I had when I was 4.

New photos all the time - my DH complains because I don't know how to hook camera up to computer and put photos on, then clear camera, etc. I am pitiful !!! He has to do it for himself and for me. I had 3 brothers, but none of them EVER came over to help me in my yard ! Tell me your secret, PLEASE.

Corgimom, You aren't pitiful. I am. I just ''learned'' to post photos and I made it harder in my mind than it was. I'm always afraid of doing the wrong thing and looking dumb. Probably because I do a lot of dumb things. LOL!

Dax, I was thinking of you and Wanda Thursday. The news said we had an F-1 tornado go thru Nichols. Chown Appliance lost their pole barn warehouse. It was completely gone, and a friend lost her life when their trailor rolled and disintegrated south of town. I felt an eerie pressure and shut the back door. That must have been when it went thru. I had the typical twigs in the yard. You wouldn't have known we had a storm here.

Hi billyporter - and I thought of you both during the storm, and doubly when the news said that a woman from Nichols had died in your storm - such a tragedy - she was a friend? I'm glad to hear you are just fine. Iowa City got hit very bad - said it was a tornado that cut through 3 1/2 miles a 1/3 of a mile wide in downtown Iowa City. Luckily, we didn't have any major damage here. There was some hail in parts of the city, but not where I live.

Now that you know how to post pics, I'm hoping to see some of your garden -

And Corgimom, I certainly agree with billyporter, there is no way you're pitiful!

I just took a long walk this morning through your gardens - I didn't get off the paths, either, Sherlock!!!

I love the gargoyles/gnomes, and that watering can !!! I have the one that belonged to my MIL, but it looks like one you can still buy anywhere today. Yours, on the other hand, is unique. I just love it ! Had I really been walking down the paths, I might have just swiped that and put it in my pocket :-)

I cannot imagine how many bricks you have in those pathways! We have very, very , very short paths, and we used lots of pavers doing them. Do you have part interest in a brickyard????

Your pics just keep getting prettier. I am embarrassed to post any of mine after seeing yours. Thanks for a breath of fresh northern air. (p.s. it is supposed to get to 82 here today. Does that mean it will be 102 by May????)

No way, Corgimom - I drool when I look at the coolness of your gardens and flowers - I'm just blessed with a great patch of land to work with - and you're right about the bricks - I never knew when I started how many it would take - I thing Menard's sees me coming anymore cause I can always find more places to "edge" with them. Luckily, we have some good sales here, and I have a truck!! And billy, you're right - the beds are going to be so beautiful this year - I can already see that and am humbled by the generosity of nature to us - I don't know why I just "got" it a couple of years ago, but will certainly enjoy nature's gifts now. And sometimes I feel like I'm overdoing the pictures, but it seems everytime I go outside, the beds have changed! Digital cameras make it so easy to record them, I just can't help it - Dax

Becki- Just took another stroll. Sigh. Now I have to get back to the real world of weeds here in the south ! I just walk down my paths and you can hear thousands of weed seeds scattering across the beds.

I love the daff pic in front of the stone wall, the hosta bed, and the impatients !@ Oh the EE and impatients too. Your fall hay bales looks 'plum southern' . I am envious of all those ferns peeking through the soil. Not that they don't grow in the south - they just can't grow through my clay !!! I keep planting them and about 95% of them die.

Keep posting those pictures so I can cool off when this southern heat gets too much for me.

Hi, pepper23 - Thanks for the kind words, and we must be kindred spirits with the old farm nostalgia. I have some wonderful memories of visiting my aunt and uncle when I was about 10 - and they had a large farm. When I look back, it's amazing how many of those favorite thoughts aren't of BIG events, but at moseying around outside and looking at all the unfamiliar equipment, the small places of loveliness that seemed to lurk around every corner. I can picture it all in my head so clearly - hopefully I will be able to transform it into a "beautiful memorial" to an earlier way of life - a pace, and a lifestyle that many will enjoy visiting again.
I'll be putting in updates next spring so hope you will have the time to check back - Dax

Dax, you are amazing! I think you have single handedly done more work than anyone I know. I didn't realize what a slope you work with. I love the abandoned farmstead. I can't believe how clean it is. When the cows were not in Grandpa's timber anymore nature filled it all in. The poison ivy came back and Dad had to mow a path with the tractor to get up wood. Last time I was up therre you had no place to turn around. It wasn't nearly as nice as my childhood memories of walking up the lane and just heading in any direction. Hi, corgimom - I was certainly surprised to see an update for the tour at this time of year, and thanks so much for enjoying the pictures. I just went through them last week as I was feeling down - will this winter ever be over? Just Saturday and today we had freezing rain and another 3 inches of mushy snow. We lost our electricity for 12 hours, so I was out there making sure the pond didn't freeze over. I've got the plans all done, and plants ordered to begin the woodland, and will be trimming the canopy in the next month so the understory has sufficient light to grow (I planted understory trees and shrubs last October). I can hardly wait!! My long-suffering DH knows how antsy I get when I can't be outside - poor guy. I'll be posting pics as I build my nostalgic farm, and hope you enjoy the trip - And please continue to send updates of your beautiful beds. As you know, I continue to get wonderful ideas from you - Maybe someday I will get to your area and will be able visit them in person. Thanks again - Dax
