Could you guys reccommend any stained glass or mosaic projects I could do with my high schoolers? What supplies would I need to purchase? I've never done them before, but, a small project, I think would be manageable for all of us.
The learning of Stained Glass is long and expensive.
On the average I would say you need to do 10 to 12 projects before you can even begin to think of selling or teaching .
Plus it is potentially dangerous for the inexperienced. ( little invisible shards of glass everywhere from cutting and shaping, lead and chemical concerns )
My high schooler has been helping me, but since you're talking about a class I would also suggest mosaics. Also, the purchasing of stained glass equipment would be prohibitive.
If you have students that develop an interest in stained glass, I would suggest talking to a local stained glass shop & negotiate for a group rate and have the local stained glass shop teach them. Some glass shops have the policy to only teach kids if a parent is there physically in their shop.
I would suggest broken tile mosaic. Collect colored tiles, place them between 2 towels, and start smashing. A hammer works great. Take a lil peek now and then to vary the sizes and shapes, then toss each color into a bowl. Tile nippers are fairly cheap and work well to shape smaller pieces, or chip off unglazed edges that stick out.
Use thinset (dries, a lil too fast for beginners) or mastic in cake decorating bags, or make your own. Apply to concrete stepping stones ($.50 to $2.00 ea), or 1/2 (minimum) plywood shapes...
