Help! We have a new pool (about one month and one week old). Part of our construction contract was that a pool service
would start our pool and take care of it for one month. Well that honeymoon period is over and we're now on our own.
Day 1:
I took a water sample into the local pool supply store and they told me that our pool had zero chlorine. I found this odd because the guy who was taking care of the pool dumped large amounts into the pool and told me that we'd only need
to add about 50 lbs. per month. Pool store told me to add 50lbs and run the chlorinator on "boost" for 24 hours.
I did this and also bought a test kit to keep and eye on the chlorine level.
Day 2:
I tested the water this morning and it was around 1.5 (2 - 4 is desired). I was going back to Pinch-a-Penny for something
I forgot anyway and I brought in a sample. He said it was at 1 and that I needed to keep track of what was going on
because he sensed something was wrong with the equipment. He suggested another day on "boost". I complied and checked the level tonight and we're back to zero.
Should I add more salt (pool store says salt level is good) or does it sound as though the cell is not working?
Hi Pool Newbie...also a pool newbie in California...had our pool put in last summer have had no problem with the salt chlorinating system until last week... found out it will not make chlorine when the temperature drops below 60 degrees! We had to add about a gallon of chlorine... a half gallon at a time and we keep testing the pool about once a week. Its doing great! We love having a pool even in the winter! I keep busy planting and taking care of the yard it looks so beautiful...were able to still have dinner by the pool and use the jacuzzi! Good luck...it definelty a learning experience!
We found that out too this winter - I had to shock the pool when it was cold. I also found out I was supposed to be shocking it May - September (hey, live and learn). We figured out the chlorination problem - I guess we had to run it at a higher voltage setting (level 2 instead of 1), which unfortunatley shortens the life of the cell. But, on the upside, we are now actually making chlorine :)
Love the pool too - love the convenience, the look, the sound...
