If anyone has a need to drill holes in SG you will find a wonderful source at this link. They are having a sale plus free shipping until April 30. I ordered bits both for portable drill and Dremmel. At first I got a little concerned because there was never any email order confirmation communication from them but in no time at all the bits appeared in the mail. I'm very very happy with Drillglass.com.

A great link and a great find ... but big dookie! Good grief! I drilled 8 holes and the diamond bit was a gonner. There is no way on earth I can afford to drill hundreds of holes at the cost of 12.00 (sale price) per every 8 holes! Totally discouraged :( waaaah waaah sniff sniff ... I'm gonna go eat some worms! lol! ... makes me want to cuss and have a temper tantrum :)

go right ahead you deserve it ;-)
If that was me you would be able to hear me cussin all the way down by you.

Bummer on the bits .

Didjoo contact the company and register a complaint telling them you want a refund for their shabby products ?

as a last resort ya can
Threaten to call your State's Attorney General's Office / Consumer Affairs Division and report them.

THIS almost always gets results for me .

Fortunately it's not due to shabby products. It says right on the website that they cannot guarantee the life of the bits. You might get one hole or a hundred holes depending on the hardness of the material you are drilling. I knew this before purchasing because I had done a little researching beforehand, but I was hoping for more than 8 holes that's for sure. None of the sites I visited will guarantee the lifespan of any of their diamond bits. SG is one of the hardest materials to drill. Now I know why I've never seen my design anywhere before.
I know for sure that I did everything right as far as water, drill speed and type/size of bit. The only other solution I can think of would be to use a diamond core bit but that requires a drill press. :( Not ready to put that kind of money into anything yet and I'm not sure if the core bits would really last any longer. waaaah! :( I'll just have to redesign and figure something else out. ... unless someone that has alot more experience than my weeny little self pops in and can give some advice :).
Worms on crackers ain't so bad, cuss cuss cuss lol!

I use diamond core bits that atttach direclty to my grinder. With just a little bit of practice, they work really well and they come in different sizes. At http://www.glasscrafters.com they sell them in 5 different sizes between $11 to $15.00. Make sure you keep the bit wet with a sponge while drilling hole.

wet drilling is truly the key to drill bit longevity, it is probably not news but glass is made from sand and therefore as a drill bit grinds through it dry it is exposed to the abrasive-ness of the glass. I've seen light oil used (3in1) with some success also, but water is the lubricant that most have readily available. A spray bottle next to the drill/drillpress will help one to remember to use it. Even the cheap bits last longer this way.

best of luck with all of your projects,
don

Thanks guys :) I do use water. Still I only got 8 holes per bit. The first 4 holes were a breeze. The last 4 holes were a horses patootie because the ball bits just wear down too quickly.
Thank you for the link :) What is the life span of the core bits you use mangomo? Do they fit any grinder or just the brand that you have? I need to drill hundreds of holes.

I have a Glastar 2 grinder and now that I think about it, I went to my local SG supplier and she set me up with 2 different sizes. I now buy my glass and supplies from a wholesale company and just reorder the same ones I got in the past. I have made at least 20 windchimes to date with at least 30 pieces per chime and have drilled holes in the bottom and top of the glass pieces and my bits are like new...and that doesn't count the hundreds (seems like anyway) that I practiced on! If you go to that link I provided, you can call them and tell them exactly what you are looking for..they are super helpful over the phone...I have the number...1-800-422-4552. If you go to that link, it is under "grinding heads and accessories".

If I had unexpected company I would be totally mortified. Part of my kitchen is cluttered with marbles and globs, everything mosaic and glass paints. My garage is cluttered with everything SG and WIP dish totems. My deck and back porch are cluttered with boxes of totem materials and hypertufa stuff. I can't find my potty. I'm too preoccupied to even tinkle so I'm sure it is spotless ... hee!
Just as soon as I phone the guys at your link (hopefully today), place my order, and put it all to use, I promise to let you know how the bits turned out. I'm so excited! :) ... v

Heehahee! Do you think they would understand if I answered the door nekkid (cause I don't have time to do laundry), hair not combed (cause I lost my brush 4 months ago) and eating cold soup from a can (cause I don't have time to cook)? That would definitely impress them. I'd never have to worry about unexpected guest again for sure!:)

Mangomo ... here's the update on the bits
I called Glasscrafters and they suggested the core bits for Dremmel over the grinder attachments. I was really nervous to take their word since you have had such great results doing things the way you do it. Anyway I ordered the 1/16 (4059) bits for Dremmel. Got them really fast in the mail. I've drilled so many holes with only one bit!!!! I am in hole drilling heaven :) Thank you again!

I've been wanting a glass saw for a long time. When I got the Glasscrafters catalog with the drill bits I was thrilled to find the Gryphon GBC40 on sale and an additional $10 off coupon. So I decided to go ahead and bite the bullet. Oh my gosh! There was $26+ shipping and $22+ FL tax. $338.00 total. I freaked! Went to YGlass and ordered the same saw with $11.95 shipping and no state tax. $301.00 total. Saved $37. Whew!
Too bad Glasscrafters has to be in this state and we gotta pay that stupid tax. Love their catalog and their friendly, helpful, fast service.

Vee8ch, glad you got help with drilling the holes...they are very nice over the phone, huh? I only use glass crafters for small items that I need in a hurry and they do have good sales. I buy most of my "big" purchases from Art Glass House in Cocoa Beach. If you have a resale tax number, you can get an account there and everything is wholesale...about 1/2 price and they have everything and more you could ever need!

Haven't gotten so far as a tax number yet. That is the next thing on my to do list (this list never ends lol!). Art Glass House is only minutes from my Moms house and I never knew it existed. Gosh Mangomo I'm gonna have to not only scrub your potty and do your dishes forever but I'm gonna have to name kids and grandkids after you too! ROFL! Thank you!
