I'm planning on building a medium sized gate in my back fence this summer. I'm thinking about a wooden gate with stone or brick columns and maybe an arch/arbor over the top. Does anyone have an interesting gate or ideas/plans? I'm looking for design ideas or helpful tips.
Thanks.
Very nice, I almost wish our driveway was long enough for a gate. I was in Mexico a few months ago and I think it's neat how most of the houses in the smaller towns had a garage that was right next to the sidewalk and the yard was walled in with beautiful wood and wrought iron gates opening out to the street. It made every yard into a quiet, shady sanctuary. It seemed a little antisocial at first, but in the evenings all the gates were open and the inhabitants would walk up a down the street and stop to chat with their neighbors.
This gate/fence was just finished to go along with a pool renovation. The contractor used standard steel posts and boxed them in with 2x cedar planks. I will be adding a lever type door handle in lieu of standard gate hardware.
Katlian, We had a home in Carson City near the Mark Twain Elementary about half way toward the Scolari's. A gate between your back yard and the neighbors behind your home. That is a throwback to a bygone era when neighbors were cordial. I like your idea of an arbor. Depending on how much yard space you have a single bar or beam or even a couple feet wide lattice. I chose the lattice for our arbor and made an 8 ft wide by 7 ft tall with lattice all around. 10 ft long ... 4 inch diameter poles set 2 ft apart hold the lattice and then 8 ft long 2X4's connect the posts and hold another lattice across the top. Everything is white and the gate is a simple picket with mesh wire toward the bottom to keep varmints out of the yard. I never had more trouble with skunks than the 2 yrs in Carson City but we have trouble with them here as well.
We live in the same neighborhood, on the other side of the school. Our backyard neighbors are the whole neighborhood, since our property abuts Blackwells Pond Park. It has a great view so we decided to install a fence that would let us see it. It has the added benefit of being difficult to graffiti. We decided to have the gate made to match the fence so it's a little plainer than I wanted but I can build an arbor somewhere else in the yard. We haven't had any trouble with skunks, just with robins eating the strawberries. Here's a photo from this morning.
Katlian, We absolutely loved every minute of the 2 years we lived in Carson City. My daughter attended Mark Twain and we had a great rappor with the 2nd grade "team teachers". We visited Yosemite Park like 6 or 7 times and just loved being only 14 miles from Lake Tahoe. One of my clients has a million dollar cabin up at the lake in Zephyr Cove. We had privileges with a weeks notice. It was like owning the place without the taxes.
