Does anyone here mix their own cleaning solutions? Does anyone have a formula that an essential oil can be added to?

My favorite essential oil supplier has a few household cleaning recipes on her web site that may give you some ideas.

Since essential oils are expensive, I don't usually add them to the cleaning solution. I have a large collection of oils so I make batches of different room sprays in glass spritzer bottles. After cleaning a room, I give it a few light spritzes with an appropriate spray. My husband smokes in the den and it can get pretty funky. This deodorizing blend is very effective for those odors, as well as mustiness in damp, closed spaces:

In a 2 oz glass spritzer bottle, mix:
10 drops Bergamot
20 drops Lemon Myrtle
OPTIONAL: 10 drops Perfumer's Alcohol (NOT rubbing alcohol). This helps disperse the oil in water.
Fill bottle with distilled water. Shake thoroughly before each use.

I saw a comparison cleaning products sketch on like Good Morning America recently and they determined that homemade, generic or name brand window cleaners all do the same job. =) Nice to know!

Hi Andidandi! I'm new to this site and really love this forum.

A couple of years ago, I got a book that I just love, called "Clean House, Clean Planet" by Karen Logan, and I use several of the cleaning recipes in it. Her simplest is just baking soda with essential oil mixed into it. It scrubs very well, rinses great, and smells fabulous!

Genuine essential oils are expensive. But if you mix up your own cleaners, it is soooo much cheaper than buying them at the store. Also you get a lovely "smug" feeling as you pass that aisle in the store, haha.

About essential oil suppliers:
Here on the East Coast we have FromNatureWithLove in CT: [HYPERLINK@www.fromnaturewithlove.com]
and Camden-Grey in FL: [HYPERLINK@www.essentialoil.net]
and Essential Oils University in IA: [HYPERLINK@www.essentialoils.org]
On the West Coast there are Majestic Mountain Sage in UT: [HYPERLINK@www.thesage.com]
and Bramble Berry in WA: [HYPERLINK@www.brambleberry.com]

None of these suppliers have a minimum order, if I remember right. Hope this helps, and enjoy! Peppermint is a nice one to start with.

One great solution that I've found is a carpet cleaning machine that I found in [HYPERLINK@www.carpetcleaningla.com.]

I pretty much use three basic cleaners... vinegar, baking soda or dishsoap.

For dishsoap - I try to find one that has no artificial color or fragrance. (Seventh generation but not always)

I use vinegar when I want a clean shine.

I use baking soda when I need abrasion. I don't use baking soda on surfaces that fear may get scratched.

I will combine dishsoap and vinegar for most cleaning situations.
