I finally finished the purple quilt I made for my sister Rylaff. The quilt is completely hand made..it is handpieced; then I hand embroidered a feather stitch around some circles where the fabric was too close to the background color, or where I had two fabrics that were similar in color, but the hue was slightly different (you try to find that many shades of purple/lavender! LOL!); then I hand quilted the whole thing; and finally the border is made up of hundreds of hand pieced diamonds and triangles. Her bed is a full sized pillow top/plush...mine is a king sized, so it doesn't look as nice on my bed as it will on hers...it should be perfect for her bed. Notice my siamese, Mezer, is hlepign me make the bed, then posing to make sure he is rmebered for posterity. Meezer always helps me quilt and crochet!
And here is a detail of the feather stitch...if you can't see it well in this pic, I'll post another where I specifically took a pic of the hand embroidery, but it was taken before I started the quilting.
THe pattern is Grandmother's Garden, which is appropriate since Lisa got her green thumb from our grandmother...and also because purple was both of their favorite colors.
Also, I had to special order the fabric for the back. It was supposed to be a purple on purple batick...it was a purple on red batik...but it works fine...Lisa loves it and that is what counts.
You're welcome. I know you will treasure it. And I had fun making it...I"m just sorry it took so long! LOL! Oh well, now you will have the quilt and the purple afghan blanket...all you need is for me to finish the paintings of your purple flowers...
you are so gifted. that quilt was gorgeous. how long did it take to make? and did the plants arrive without showing rot? my nanners are doing so good. hope you have some pretty blooms. have they auctioned your painting yet?
It ttok me about five years to make the quilt, but taht is because I kept putting it dopwn to work on other projects. If I had worked on it constantly, it probably would have taken about six months.
The plants made it perfectly! I got them i the ground the same day. And they are digging thier toes into the cow manure and doing the happy daylily dance.
Haven't heard anything on the auction or how the painting did. I'm supposed to go to lunch with the lady who runs the botanical gardens and her garden club in May...that'll probably be when I hear about the painting.
I saw a photo on a seed company website of some wildflowers I wnt to paint to repalce the painting...it will be a perfect match for my guest room. Unfortunately, the picture is only a thumbnail and when I tired to blow it up, it came out pixilated. So I emailed the seed comapny and explained that I wanted a full sized copy of the photo, and why...they emailed me the full sized jpeg! It will be even better than the one I donated to the botanical gardens auction.
Lovely quilt, and handpieced and quilted too. Your sis is
very lucky. Love your wall color too, to say nothing of
Mezer, who - in typical Siamese fashion - does not
give a hoot of what we think of his back side LOL.
I had a Siamese female for l4 years. You did a very
nice job on the color placement too, and I know what
you mean about finding the right shades of purple and
lavendar. Usually they have too much black in them to
make them that true color you need.
I'm building my stash for 8 years now so I can make one
for my "purple" daughter.
Very nice job, and quite an unusual border.
Did you do English paper piecing?
I used acrylic templates and a rotary cutter, then just stitched them together. On the border I took two matching shapes and sewed them together on two sides, right sides facing, then turned them out and pressed them and then sewed them to the quilt. I would have finished it a year ago if it hadn't been for that border! LOL!
thank you! I'm working on one ofr my niece right now using all btiks and a Dresden pattern. The idea is to make each circle look like a piece of stained galss. I"m having a heck of a time getting the circles to come out right. I'm srue it just takes some practice. When I tried to amke the first one, I tired to put the angled pieces to the circle as I sewed them together...I ended up with too few angles and it didn't lay falt. So now I am trying to sew the angles togehter, using the exact number shown in the fdiagram...then I'll go back and put the circle in the center after I get the angled pieces sewn togehter. Hopefully that will work. Fortuantely, I only need one circle of each color and I bought a yard of each, so I have a little wiggle room for screw ups.
