I think this is the species I have. I'm not sure how the image below works; but I'll try to post a picture of my Centaurea gymnocarpa. Your photo shows great detail of this unusual flower. According to the USDA I'm in zone 6b. It seems a bit too high to me; but I'm not going to argue with the experts! :-)
