I found this when I came home from work - it's in my garden. I was laughing so hard, I had to get the camera. So, now tell me, what do you think this is. I am still ROFL.

Nope, it's not dirty. LOL

Those beds are sooo awesome!!! I collect antiques and have seen quite a few of them. I'm just waiting for the most ornate one that I can find. Does yours still have the springs/mattress? Have a pic?

I've an antique bed from the 1800's, high back with arches and birds. I didn't realize how short beds (and people) were back then. I had to add extenders to fit our regular full size mattress.

The original springs were replaced with heavy army springs. I think the thin cotton batting mattress is original. My great aunt can date it to 1923, when she was married. The quilt is very old and yes people were shorter!

Oh, that is beautiful! Beautiful woodwork. One of these days, I will get one. I just love it that you have the history on yours and that it belonged to someone in your family.

I've my mom and dad's antique kitchen table, really pretty, I refinished it. I know your not supposed to refinish antiques, but it was a must do. There is another story that goes along with this - but we'll do it another time. It's a doooozzzy.

I also have my Grandma's cedar chest, lots of history in there. I remember snooping in it when I was a kid. LOL. I just remember we weren't supposed to be in there - and like most kids - it just makes you want to see what they are "hiding". So, everytime they looked away, we were opening it. LOL. Nothing much in there but pictures. LOL. Those were good times.

Thanks for showing us your Murphy Bed and for opening it up. It's a great piece of furniture.

Crystal

My some is currently living in St Charles area. I lived in the Maryland Heights,Weldon Springs area until I retired. Would be nice for people in the St louis area to have a get together also. I am SUPPOSE TO make a few trips up there for horseshoe tournamnets this year at the new hall of fame in Quail Ridge Park in Wentzville, Plus I have a bowlling tournament with the Elks up there. That Nursery Wine country Gardens would be a fine place to have a get together.

Yeah shaws Garden would be fine.I was raised in that area. As a fine upstanding youngster I used to go to the gardens regularly. I used to fish in there in what is now the Japanese Garden. It was much larger then ,before they filled some of it in. I went in there a couple of years ago for the first time in over 50 yrs. Was a wonder I got in. I have been thrown out of there so many times for sneaking in to fish I cannot count them all. Been banned a whole bunch also. Never did have any interest in the plants at that time. But I want you to know the way I arrange my own garden reminds me of the way they did things there,so something must have rubbed off. When I was there this last time I drove around the back to the street that runs in back of it. Low and behold there was still a hole in the fence that we made over 50 yrs ago in our sneaking about. Oh it was such fun at Mo Botanical Garden. Maybe we can all sneak in thru my special entrance.

I did get sent on a mission to grab some echinaceas from a dumpster at Home Depot for some fellow DGers once and got stuck down at the bottom of the dumpster because I wasn't bright enough to drag my step stool in with me when I hopped over the rim and dropped to the bottom on the inside of the dumpster. I got caught rooting around in that dumpster after hours by a very nice police officer who thought I was a homeless person. I was in the process of mounding up garbage to create a makeshift staircase to try to get OUT with the plants when he used the hood of his car or my step stool to get up and shine a light down on me. I was horrified and had tried to hide motionless barely breathing on the other side of the dumpster in the corner under garbage. He reached out and offered me a dollar out of his wallet presumably for coffee in a place where I could go warm up. With visions of my name splashed all over the local newspaper for being in a dumpster, I simply took the dollar bill and said, "Thank you sir, thank you very kindly". My husband was not happy, not happy at all and was most certainly not impressed with my haul of purple and white echinaceas that I did manage to bring home pots and all. My husband still can't get over that I accepted a dollar from that poor cop.

pirl, the cop was in Gurnee IL by Six Flags Great America. MoBot is in Missouri. My husband keeps the dollar in a zip lock baggie on the kitchen counter. He likes to wave it around from time to time. He also never misses an opportunity pointing out to me that all I've got to show for that fiasco (where I came home smelling like something that should be embalmed) is 2 or 3 Ecinacea 'White Swan' plants out front.

cathy4, don't worry about the size of the hole. Have gas chainsaw, will travel. If my big butt is going through that hole, yours is following.

I am going to try my best to get there too because there are some special people in Missouri that I'd like to meet. The end of the month has eighth grade and HS graduation parties for anyone who has kids in those grades. Toss in a few cross overs for kids in scouts as well as confirmation and Bar Mitzvah celebrations and it might be a good idea to steer clear of the end of May in favor of the first or second weekend. How is the weather down there the beginning of May? Is it past the rainiest part of the season and moving toward daytime weather at least in the 50's perhaps even in the 60's?

I just pulled that rocket scientist stunt in the last few years. I'm not giving back the dollar even if I do ever see him again. Too embarrassing and I wouldn't want him to be in a position to recognize me in daylight. God forbid my husband and I ran into him at some charity or something after he was able to put two and two together. It's a small world out there.

I have an arborists chainsaw. I use it quite a bit. It's the perfect size for me to easily take down 25' buckthorns and most tree of heavens as well as multistemmed Japanese honeysuckles so I'm thinking I could easily widen a hole in a wood fence for us generously proportioned butt folk. I've got the Stihl Pro which is really light weight yet powerful. It's a great size for somebody who doesn't have a lot of height or reach... or the strength to handle a power tool that weighs a lot. You'd be pleasantly surprised at all the ickies and nasties you can take down with an arborists chainsaw. I'm not saying I'd feel comfortable downing a 50' Tree of Heaven and most certainly not a 75' Norway Maple because my blade isn't long enough but then I've got my husband and brothers who have the big momma chainsaws in the 26" length and longer to get those whoppers that need to go to plant heaven. I wasn't the first female volunteer for the State to be taught how to use a chainsaw so a 50 year old chainsaw momma wouldn't exactly make the papers or anything.

When you meet me and see me in person you will laugh and gag even doubly harder. I am soooooo not the type to be found at the bottom of a dumpster. But then again I am not exactly the type to work with a chainsaw and I do. Look what gardening has reduced us all to!

I went and looked up weather averages for Missouri for the month of May and found that you lucky ducks get daytime highs of around 77 with nightly lows of around 58. That's like perfect weather.

There's Saturday the 10th and Sat the 17th that sort of fall in the middle of the month of May '08.

I have got to get a hold of my little buddy greenbrain and let her know that there might be a get together.

Looks as if MoBot's Butterfly House will have something going on both of those weekends for those interested in flutterers and they can be reached at 636-530-0076

Their EarthWays Center has some crafts that might be of interest to others.

The Shaw Nature Center looks interesting to me-
http://www.shawnature.org/
http://www.shawnature.org/events/calofevents.aspx
"Native Plant School is a year-round series of mostly outdoor learning sessions in the Whitmire Wildflower Garden at Shaw Nature Reserve. They will cover various aspects of native home landscaping and prairie/savanna/wetland reestablishment. Please bring your questions, comments, photos, drawings, plant specimens, etc. for these three-hour discussion sessions."

And greenbrain told me about this place which looks like it would be a lot of fun to go to as a group for a late night stroll-
http://www.greatriverroad.com/Pere/owls.htm

Anyone have any interest in any of these activities?

Yes marsue, it's hysterically funny now because it is behind me. I need to fess up to something. Shortly after I realized I had left my step stool on the outside of the dumpster, I was so frustrated sitting down there in smelly garbage that I had a personal pity party for myself and cried. Most of the garbage was 1 gallon potted plants or smaller and when I tried to stack those to step on them to raise myself up enough to try to swing a leg up and over to get out, they collapsed. The rest of the garbage was mostly from a hot dog stand they have in the entrance to the Home Depot and I was literally knee deep in people's left over sticky sugary soda cans, cheeseburgers, hot dogs, and french fries plus dirty napkins and well you get the idea. I was miserable and filthy from ketchup and mustard and there were flies in that dumpster. I hate flies. I hate flies with a passion. Flies are filthy disease carriers. I had very few choices as I saw it-
a) I could wait until the morning and yell out to an employee to get me out at which point the employee would probably go get a manager that would probably call the police
OR
b) sit down there quietly and wait for the dumpster to fill up so I could get out on my own.
Great choices, eh? Either way I looked at it, the odds of my husband calling the cops to report me as missing were increasing the longer I was gone and unaccounted for. No matter what I did, it was looking as if I was going to have some explaining to do particularly if he called and reported me missing claiming his geek wife was never later than 10 or 15 minutes without calling and had never disappeared before. I had told him what time I'd be home and that I was running over to Home Depot. I certainly didn't exactly tell him what I was going to be doing over there as I saw no need for him to have the details. I always tell my husband exactly where I am going and if I'm going to be late for any reason, I call him and let him know. There was no way to call him to tell him I might be really late because my cell phone was in the car which was parked far away from the dumpster. Like I said, I sat down there and cried for a bit and I rarely cry. I just hope that if anyone else ever decides to pick garbage from one of those jumbo dumpsters that they attach their step stool to their leg or something by a rope so they can get out or bring a cell phone to call a friend in case you need bailing out and make sure you don't lose it in the garbage. Admittedly, that was incredibly stupid to get in without thinking about how to get out. Didn't realize the dumpster was going to be so empty. There was only about 2 - 3' of garbage down at the bottom. So now you all have the truth. I'm not a wild one but a whimp with no backbone.

And marsue, you definitely need to bring terryr with you because she's good people and I can tell you from first hand experience she is a lot of fun!

Don't anyone be worrying about the size of the hole. No butt is too big! Remember, I've got the gas chainsaw. I can always touch up the hole a little bit to make sure every last one of us gets through.

Let's see what we have so far-

ozarkian left it to us ladies- chicken!

crystalnurse said May worked for her.

cathy4 says Saturdays are best for her. Saturdays are probably best for everyone who lives locally to avoid Sunday which is normally a family day. I can always take off at noon on Friday to be sure to get down into that area so no biggie for me. Probably the same for Pepper because I think she's on the other side of the state and is about 6 hours away.

Mother's Day is on Sunday, May 11th, 2008 so we probably want to avoid that weekend.

Memorial Day is Monday, May 26th, 2008 so we probably want to avoid that weekend because kids have no school and lots of people take off to enjoy that long weekend.

The last Saturday of the month is the 31st and I suspect there are going to be a lot of conflicts for people who have to go to graduation parties.

How about Saturday the 17th? The weather looks as if it is generally decent around then barring some torrential down pour.

Oops, posting when ozarkian was posting. Please do find out those dates for your Spring Fling. I tried to look it up online to get dates and about all I could find was that this was a big annual event that looked like a lot of fun.

For me, I'm actually ok with almost any weekend other than Memorial Day weekend because we normally take off to go up north to be with family. If Saturday the 24th was the best Saturday for everyone, I'd try my best to work around that Memorial Day weekend to be able to get down to MO. I've got a kid graduating from 8th grade and was looking at having his party at the traditional time which is basically right when they graduate but I'm in control of when his party will be so I can easily work around that.

Equilibrium...thanks for the ID. HATE the way that sucker smells. What is the distribution of that species? Saw something almost identical in Pennsylvania early summer one year at my dad's farm. TY!

I believe their range is all of continental North America.

Look here dear! It's the Stinkhorn Hall of Fame-

Actually, Old Aunt Annie's rear end wasn't that plump, hardeeharhar! I've been out playing in the dirt, preparing pots for polar planting, what a high for January!

Snicker :))

Isn't it tho! We had 59* yesterday with clouds, sun, clouds, sun. No rain. We're getting that today and are barely 34*. I have a garage full of pots with potting soil and then dirt for the seedlings to be transplanted into. Alas, another few months to go before I can play.

Is there a "best of Dave's Garden" area? This picture belongs there, haha. How can something this silly still make me laugh?
