| I get so overwhelmed by all that I "have to" do that sometimes I am paralized and end up doing nothing. My husband tells me to focus on just one thing - to pick one thing - and make sure it gets done, then consider the day successful.
Today my one thing was cleaning the kitchen. This is my usual "one thing" lately and it is easy to choose because if I do it everyday there is not much to clean. My list, however, is not getting any shorter.
My "one thing" for tomorrow is cleaning the front porch.

| Well, today I got out of bed...does that count? LOL!
Hmmm...I think tomorrow it will either be getting all the Little League fundraiser candy that didn't sell back from the parents of the kids on our team and then getting it to the lady in charge or it will be dividing dahila tubers. :o) |

| My "one thing" for tomorrow -- barring any interruptions from DH and/or the two boyz -- is the kitchen. I want to find my counters again and get rid of the pile of "stuff" next to the island and get the shelf paper down on the upper cabinets that I haven't done so far. Plus laundry, especially the bed linens, in between. If I can get that one room cleared out, I'm well on my way to getting the rest of the downstairs straightened up and cleaned before my summer-long troup of company arrives.
I'll let you know how far I got.

| Gift - my husband would say "That's not 'one thing'". He says that if you have to use the word 'and' you are expecting too much.
There are a lot of little steps I need to make to get the porch clean but if I can get the hose out with the scrub brush at the same time to run it over the porch, I'm calling it good. I know I won't be truely happy until I sort throught the shoe box, wash the windows and paint the sills, but at least I will have gotten the floor scrubbed.
Good Luck - to all of us! |

Cross the front porch off my todo list, but add another thing - paint the front porch! I didn't realize how bad the paint was peeling from the floor until I washed it...

| Well, I got all the candy and money from the sales turned into the person in charge. Yea, me!
Before I did that, I planted the rest of the annuals left over from the pots we gave our DS's teachers. I also finally planted the things I got from the co-op that Pixydish hosted and I mowed the lawn and watered part of it. I still need to finish watering and then I need to weed while the ground is still wet. Oh, I almost forgot, I also fed my roses, spread slug bait and fed the rest of my plants too. Wow, I did get alot done today! :o)
And for tomorrow, since it's Mother's Day...I want to spend the whole day in the garden again! ;o) |

I'm an over-achiever. It took two days because Saturday was lost to getting Alex ready for the Senior Ball and rescuing a woman at the Firestone store. Her car had died and she needed a ride out to the Enterprise rental place at the airport, 30 miles away. My DH volunteered our services and then we went to dinner at the Chinese restaurant we like in that area and then to the mall to bask in the air-conditioning while Charles went shopping.
Today, we slept in until noon and then called our next exchange student in the Czech Republic and talked with my son and daughter-in-law. DH had a headache so he went back to bed for about an hour or so while I tackled the kitchen. I got the messiest counter cleaned off and scrubbed and the sink cleaned. Plus four loads of wash done and put away. DH got up and decided the guest room was the higher priority so we straightened up a little in there. Then a shower and a change of clothes and dinner at the Asian restaurant in our neighborhood. Then home and watch the last half-hour of the last West Wing episode and now I'm ready for bed.
So even though it took two days, I count it as a partial success. And a partial success is more than I've been able to accomplish lately.

| Got2BeGreen,
Other than sweating like a stuck pig because we haven't turned on the air conditioning yet (but will today), it was great. I got the kitchen part of the housework done only because DH was napping. I got the two dinners out, sugar-free candy, coffee (I LOVE coffee), and "Nanny McPhee" from hubby, and purple irises and mauve tulips from my son and daughter-in-law. Very nice day!
Today's "one thing" is cleaning the half bath downstairs. Swish the toilet, scrub the sink and counter, and windex the mirror. Maybe lay shelf paper inside the cabinet, maybe. And don't allow anyone to put anything on MY clean kitchen counter!
Company's coming in nine days and I've never met these people (Alex's mom and sister), so I've got to keep pushing myself. And then it's non-stop company and/or new exchange students from July 1 through the end of August. This site and the SheForums are helping to keep me focused and giving me encouragement. More status reports later. Back to work now.

| Yeah you!! Gift. Lucky you on Mother's Day. I got a new washing machine...well, sort of. We have been thinking about getting a new one for a while - it just coincided with Mother's Day.
Mendy - Thanks for doing that co-op. I don't think I could keep it as organized as you can.
I sort of got my 'one thing' done today - moving my lavender plants from the top of the garden. I got two of them dug up and planted, then took a break. Later, I dug up the other three plus the dusty miller and snap-dragons I found under them. I didn't realized it but during all of this I was getting heat exhaustion. I loaded all of the plants into the cart and was headed to the new flower bed when I started to feel VERY sick. I went inside to find that I was the brightest red color I've ever seen. Two quarts of water and an ice pack later - I'm feeling better. So - everthing is dug up but not everything is planted. Maybe after it cools off I can go out and finish. (96* today.)

| Mendy - more than anything else I want to get my dahlia tubers in the ground. I think I'm going to bag the idea of putting them in the top of the garden (where I've already started) The ground is just too hard to work there, what with the old road bed there and all. If you don't want to do the dahlias, you could plant my daylilies and irises for me...or just keep me company while I plant them. Just so you know - I am not working outside between 1 and 4 tomorrow so come early if you can. If not, we can just have a sit-down on the front porch and drink tea. 8-P |

| So...My one thing today was to plant my dahlias...Well, with mgh's help we got 36 planted today. She also did a lovely job of dividing a GIANT daylily clump for me. We got 21 divisions off of one clump. I certainly hope it makes pretty flowers. We also finished planting the lavender plants I nearly killed myself digging yesterday. Let's see...what else...three roses (hubby helped with one), all of the daylily divisions plus two more daylilies she gave me and 16 petunias. The petunias she did after I left to go to my DSD middle school orientation.

| Well, last night was the spring choir concert and two of our exchange students (one was Ida--DH is her community rep--the other was Alicia, Alex's girlfriend) were singing. So between picking up Ida and attending the concert and scooping up the kids after, I was tied up from getting home from work at 6 until 8 or 8:30. Then we stopped at the store to pick up more "liquids" and at Jack-in-the-Box to feed a ravenous Alex. Then home, put away the groceries, and take Charlie to the grocery store to get the couple things he needed. And then to bed. No work on the kitchen floor.
I'm bowing out of the departure orientation on Sunday and I plan to do what I hope will be the last of the surface cleaning. Saturday has to be the day that we haul the non-essential stuff into the garage and start to clean in earnest.
So tonight, my one thing will have to be two things. The kitchen floor and cleaning the wrought iron security door, since that's the first thing you see as you walk up to the house and it's filthy.
Other than all that, life is good. LOL |

Did Pop tell you about the window in my van?
Hmmmm...what's my one thing for today? I'm not sure about that. I think it might be weeding my irises and daylilies...should get out there before the sun hits the west side of the house.

| When I got in my van to come home, I tried to put up the window and it fell forward in the door. It looked very strange and sounded horrible! Just then DH called and I didn't know what to do. He was getting the kids to bed so it's not like he could drive out and help me with it. I went in and talked to Pop and he came out and pulled it up as far as he could. I called Dave J. on the way home and he said I could drop it by if I could leave it there for him to look at. He fixed the motor in it last year...says those motors are very prone to break downs. It looked to me and to Pop that it just got off track, but I haven't heard from Dave yet so I don't know what happened. |

| Didn't get very much done last night, well, at least not the two things I said that I wanted to get done. I rearranged one of my kitchen cabinets and lined two more shelves with something beyond the paper towels I threw down when we moved in. I brought in one of those skinny plastic rolling shelf thingees that usually go in the laundry room, filled it with the general cleaning supplies that I normally keep under the sink, and rolled it into the cranny in the hall closet.
But, and this is a substantial "but," I had a very slow day at work yesterday so I made a master list of housekeeping jobs, gave them a frequency, and using that, made up a list of jobs for the next four weeks divided between daily jobs and "get these done sometime this week" and then sorted by room. I may not get to them all, but now I have a list to work off of. With a written list, I'll be less prone to flitting around from place to place to place. I often feel like I got nothing done when really I did, but it just doesn't look that way because the results of my work are scattered all through the house.
My "definitely gotta get done today" job is run to Borders during lunch to buy DH his birthday present (it's tomorrow). Tonight's "one thing" is cleaning that front door and my dailies for the entry way (it's a really short list).
After school today, Alex, God bless 'im, is going to move the boxed stuff from the dining room and the family room into the garage.

| Oh my goodness, but I had a productive night. I was home alone and did over two hours of 15 minutes of cleaning followed by a 5-minute break. I turned on some American classics on the cable music channels and started at the front porch. The junk in the hallway and on the bottom of the staircase has been transported to their proper rooms; the front hall is swept; the runner is laid; the staircase is vacuumed; the potted plants on the front porch are watered; the living room is about this close to being presentable; the art piece for the bottom of the staircase is hung; the dishwasher is empty; and a load of wash is waiting to be hung up. Just have to take the recycles out to the appropriate dumpster, take my evening meds, and get ready for bed. |

Tomorrow and Sunday, however, I've GOT to be a whirling dervish. Alex's mom and sister arrive on Wednesday, and the house is still a flaming disaster. Five rooms to go! The kitchen and family room are the worst and will take the most time.
And after that, I'm going to collapse for a night and veg in the bedroom with a book and a glass of Kahlua and lock the door--enter at your own risk!
And then, miracles of miracles, it will hopefully be maintenance-level duties for a while.

| A really odd day yesterday -- it sprinkled a little while before Alex and I left in the morning so my windshield had those annyoying dust circles all over it, and, a senior moment here, I couldn't remember how to turn on my windshield washer. Then the morning traffic jam around school was at the intersections before and after where it usually is and the traffic on the rest of my commute was either very light or not there at all. I had a quiet morning at work and got fired/laid off that afternoon so, needless to say, my cubicle there has been decluttered.
I came home early, of course, and Alex had some good news and some bad news.
(1) The Bad News: He was his usual two or three minutes late to his first period class. He was picked up in the sweep of tardy students and was assigned Saturday school for this morning. DH got him out of it since they didn't follow the proper notification procedures--the joys of once being a regional director in his former union.
(2) The Good News: Goldie, the garage kitty, finally had her six babies. So I am the grandma to six kitties in the garage and a dog, a cat, and a ferret in Nevada.
Being without gainful employment brings its own stresses, but at least it's removed the stress about cleaning the house before Alex's mom and sister arrive on Wednesday. I've got four days now to clean instead of just two! Well, actually three days now, since we slept in this morning and Monday, I have to go to the unemployment office and start my paperwork, which together will siphon off a morning and an afternoon. But it's more time than I had.
Enough rambing. Breakfast, get dressed, hit the checklist, and clean, clean, clean. Click the image for an enlarged view.

Congratulations on your new kitties - I've been hoping my new cat will get pregnant, but I just don't think there are any tom cats around. She has cycled three time so far this spring - but not preggers yet.
Well, I guess being late didn't matter all that much yesterday - I was actually 1 hour and 45 minutes early - I had intended to go in early to get some training in a new area, but my trainer had called in sick.
My one thing for today was to clean up a few projects I have going on around the garden - all done now! Yeah me! Did the dishes when I got home this morning too...yeah me again!

| My one "gotta do today" thing is definitely get to the unemployment office and deal with the state bureaucracy again.
Domestically, it's work on the family room. It's a disaster, still, and the biggest chunk of work downstairs. Once that's done, the rest of the house should be a breeze, even if those rooms are still somewhat cluttered. I've been doing a little bit here, a little bit there in most of the rooms and it's really beginning to show! My payroll was a major stressor, and that's gone now, and I got a lot of sleep over the weekend. I'm even budgeting in about 90 minutes this afternoon for a nap, depending on how long filing for unemployment takes.
I'll check in on and off during the day to see what the rest of the world is doing -- and try not to start playing a video game. If I do, all bets are off. LOL |

I FINALLY got my dahlias in the ground!!! YEA ME!!! I also did 4 loads of laundry and cleaned up the kitchen. Oh we also went out to Airlie and picked up our half of the beef we split with DH's co-worker, I got a bunch of stuff done for the co-op and I got Maggie in to the vet for her shots. That darn dog! ;o) They gave me 4 sedatives to give her to calm her down so they could trim her nails. Well, do you think it calmed her down any???? NO!! They were very surprised that it basically had no effect on her. This afternoon...about 6 hours after her appt. she got kinda sleepy, but she still followed me everywhere I went! LOL
I'm not sure what my one thing for tomorrow is. I think I'll try to get my new daylilies in the ground. |

| Yea you Mendy!!!! 4 sedatives and still not sleepy - that's amazing. Sounds like you got a lot done.
Gift - how did things go at the employment office? How was the nap? (lol) I managed to squeeze in a nap today too!
Today...er yesterday officially, I planted 28 feet each of walla walla onions and lettuce. 9 feet each of cabbage, cauliflower, carrots, and scallions. And about a foot each of radishes and garlic. I got the rows prep'd for the corn, tomatoes, peppers and brocolli.
I also scrubbed the bathroom floor and did two loads of laundry. Didn't get to the office but the day turned out nicer than I thought it was going to be so I spent a lot of time outside.
What's on tomorrows agenda??? Dahlias. They got rained on so I feel like I should get them in the ground ASAP. I think I'll put them in the front flower bed with the roses, but I'll have to haul a bunch of top soil from the garden area to bring it back up to grade level after we removed all of the sod and river rock.
Yesterday and today, DH and FIL spent a good deal of time planning the drip system for the garden and we got most of the stuff for it. DH spent the better part of the day putting the new pump in the river and getting the electrical figured out on it only to find out the motor on the pump was burned up. When we got it at HD, we could tell it was a return and it had a ding in it, but figured that it must work otherwise they wouldn't have put it back out for sale...We figured wrong.
Also today - the real war on moles has begun!!!!!!!! They have pushed up two dahlias and two of the petunias you planted under the Japanese maple. They are also moving into the vegetable garden. We got a heavy duty mole trap today.
I also noticed today that 4 of the 6 dahlias I planted at the top of the garden (way too soon) are actually coming up!
Yea me!

No nap--that was out-and-out optimisim on my part.
The last time I filed for unemployment was in 1991. This time I could do it online. What a timesaver! I scrolled through the job listings on the website and found three that are right up my alley. I have to brush up and update my resume and get it sent in--online, of course--right after lunch.
The rest of the morning, I'm focusing on the kitchen and the guest room/office. Does anyone know how to rig up the keyboard to give me a shock if I stop to play computer games???????

LOL Hubby used to get hacked off at me because I'd have to go to work the next day and I'd be up playing mah jong until 3 or 4 in the morning. I couldn't get my fingers to stop clicking the "next game" button. And you just CAN'T stop in the middle of a game!!! That's just not done in civilized society! | Alex came through again! He carried out the last of the downstairs boxes and swiffered the kitchen and family room. And then cooked dinner. I putzed and futzed most of the day without much focus other than on the guest room. The sheets and comforter are washed and ready to be put back on the bed. Two more boxes to either unpack or relocate to the garage. Then vacuum.
I discovered that both of my stove fan filters don't fit in the dishwasher at the same time and one just barely fits, so I'm washing them in two separate loads and the knives and forks are waiting their turn since their space has been usurped by the filter.
My back started hurting this afternoon so I took one of my back pills. Zonksville. I was falling asleep within a half-hour.
I'm yawning up a storm right now, so I'm off to bed in a few minutes.
Night!

| Well, today I mowed the lawn, trimmed the boxwoods and the rhodie that is done blooming, pulled some weeds, deadheaded the irises and cut a very nice bouquet of roses to bring in the house! Wow, what a change from yesterday...I was a slug.
Good job, Got2! So, this summer when I need produce, I'll just go out to your place! LOL |

| I can't believe your rhodies are done and that you've got roses already! My rhodie is in full bloom still and I'm enjoying the heck out of it.
I have one rose with buds on it but no blooms yet. I can hardy wait!
As far as produce goes...I hope I'll have enough to share...LOL. Really though, I am trying only to plant what I know we will eat. Nothing weird like brussel sprouts or squash. I am also trying to plant so that we will have things coming ripe over a period of time. For example, of the 10 foot row I've alloted for radishes, I only planted about a foot and a half this week and I'll plant the same over the next few weeks so that they won't all be ready at the same time. I'm doing the same for corn. I probably should have done the same with the lettuce, but I am trying head lettuce so I thought it wouldn't hurt to plant all at once. I hope the lettuce is better than the stuff we planted last year - that stuff was TERRIBLE!
Look at the funny flower I found today. I think it is an allium, but I'm not sure. Click the image for an enlarged view.

Yep, my roses really took off this year...and hardly any black spot either! I'm so excited about that part!
I was just kidding about the produce. But hey, could you plant some zucchini for us? Purty please!! I would love to have some fresh zucchini! I'll even get the seeds for you!

| Well, I guess it's been a while since I've been on here. DH and I went to the coast for a few days. Today was nice over there but I was itching to get back home and finish planting. Today I got 4 loads of laundry done and labeled all of the dahlias that are planted now. Also got most of the vegetable garden done. The only thing left is the peppers and tomatos. I have enough room that I think I'll plant the rest of my dahlias in there and a whole row of sunflowers. I'd also like to get the rose bed finished up tomorrow. I have to haul soooo much dirt though... |

| I got one of two things done today that have to be done. Got my unemployment phone interview rescheduled so it doesn't conflict with a doctor's appt. Now I have to call the community service section of the cop shop to report that our cars were entered on Sunday during the night. Nothing damaged; only a couple CDs taken, including one that I absolutely hated.
I've got the house to myself this morning. The boyz are taking the first two of their six finals and DH is at work. I need to get back to the list of dailies and find the right balance between work and rejuvenation.
High point of the last couple days was pulling on a pair of shorts I hadn't worn since last summer and finding $35 in the pocket! |

Today I got 25 more dahlias planted - yeah me!!! Just a few more to do - maybe 10 -15 of them...
DH and I also got the drip irrigation system for the garden glued together. He and FIL will be putting the new pump in the river and hooking it up tomorrow. We just have to get the tomatos and the sunflowers planted and we will be all done. I think I have some celery seeds around here somewhere...? Maybe not...
DSD and the two neighbor boys planted the peppers today. Yeah them!! Didn't get to the rose bed, but there is next week.
Tomorrow I have to BUY hostas - yeah me!
Oh...and I have to remember to pick up the cat...8-P |

| Well, I bought the hostas and remembered to pick up the cat...
I also posted a standing bounty with my kids - I pay them 20 cents for every slug they find in or around the garden. DSD found 12 Wednesday afternoon - most of those without even looking really hard. Now if only someone would pay me 20 cents for every slug...
I've been very busy at work the last couple of days and haven't had time to do much of anything at home except sleep. I'll have to get back at it on Sunday.

(On Thursday she totalled her car and dislocated her ankle. She is staying with me while she recovers because she has no one else who will take care of her.
Yesterday I climbed a mountain of laundry, cleaned the bathroom, and swept and mopped all the vinyl. Today I am going to mow and edge the lawn, and possibly get my new hostas in the ground...but that's two things. ;o) |

| mgh - the hostas look really good.
After I cut the rhizomes to half their length, can I plant both parts or just the end with the green growth?
Well, today, as I said in my earlier post, I got started weeding the front flower bed - what a job!!! I never should have let the woodland geraniums get a foot-hold because they are terrible to tear out. I did a section that is about 4 feet by 6 feet and filled up our little trailer for the lawn mower with weeds. I also pulled up a stump! Yea Me!!
Also today:
1. planted one of my roses
2. fertilized 9 roses
3. sprayed the roses with systemic crud protection.
4. bought and planted 3 tomato plants
5. bought 2 cubic yards of bark mulch
6. shoveled 2 cubic yards of bark mulch out of the back of the truck (yes, I did it! Hubby didn't help at all.)
7. cleaned out the rabbit hutch
8. cleaned out the chicken coop (serious grossness here!!!)
9. put up plant markers for 6 of my roses
For tomorrow:
Buy hubby's father's day present - I'm getting him a gas grill but don't tell him...shhhhh...!!!
Look what we found in the rose bed this afernoon...we salted him.

On the irises, plant just the end with the green growth. Have you cut them yet? Ya know, you might want to post your pic in the irises forum just to make sure I am telling you the right info. I would hate for those to be something other than a bearded iris and me giving you the wrong info about them.
Wow, sounds like you shoveled some great fertilizer today! LOL
I planted my caladiums, trimmed my other rhodie, sprayed everything with Messenger again and put out some slug bait today. I have to get an earlier start tomorrow.
BTW, your caladiums are here. I can have DH bring them with him to work Thursday, unless you are going to be in the area and want to come get them. |
