oak steps and risers go up to the wall - I am concerned about the look of the gap at the stairs edge. I had tried paintable caulking designed for this application in the past - but decided I didn't like how it was turning out. I saw a friends stairs where they had a single peice of wood on both side before the treads went down... It's too late for that here. Are there molding tricks or similar that I can try? moulding wouldn't be too bad... except the break on each tread overhang?
A board running up each side would be extremely difficult at best to install now - to do it right, you'd basically have to pull up all the steps & all the risers, put in the boards, then trim all the steps & risers to accomodate the width of the board & put them back. Do-able, but I wouldn't want the job..
You might look at a simple strip of 1/4 round. One piece up the riser & one along the top of the step. trim it at an angle to fade into the curve of the step's front, then maybe fill around the curve with a matching wood putty. A bit of putty going around the corner like that shouldn't be as noticeable as long lines of it going up each side of the stairwell.
