| balvenie, that would make a beautiful backsplash it a kitchen or bathroom. Have you put them on mesh B4 and mounted them? Very awesome work! |

| The glazes were first dip in Vincent's Starry Night with second and third dip in Ozaki Green. By reversing the sequence they would have turned out much different. Glaze chemistry is the most exciting part of pottery, wish I could do more of it. (Might hazard another class when the new Arts and Sciences building is finished.) Although the dipping process was as consistent as I could manage, I could only do so much during each class period and over the course of the school quarter dipping, pouring, firing, glaze content changed resulting in the color variations. But I aint building no piano.
Mangomo, I just used thinset mortar to adhere the tiles to cement backer-board. At DW's suggestion it looks like the board may become the center of a gate in the big arbor. Nows the time I could use your welding skills Don. Now that we have a good kitchen range perhaps the tile backsplash would be appropriate. That would be a fun project. |

| Darius, at this point in time it just leans up against the sunroom wall. The friend who I hope will do the welding is out of town for a few weeks. When he returns (and hopefully agrees to do the job) the tiles will be centered in a steel gate in the big green arbor. Tinker and Immy are a bit upset 'cause they can't get in the back planting area on their 'racetrack', but the plants said thank you. Click the image for an enlarged view.

| Thanks for the update! I long for the space to "create" again. Will soon have "space" but no building for some time. |

| JoAnne, the tiles are nine inches square after firing. I think I cut them eleven inches to start so you can see how much clay shrinks in the firing process. Didn't know what to do with them so they sat around for a year or two until I made a table to put them on. It works well in the sunroom, but seems to always be covered with "stuff". | No I didn't Darius. I made them in a ceramics class at the Community College and the firing was done along with all the other students works. The Ceramics classes are in a brand new building now and I'd sure like to take another class. Maybe when the weather improves in the Spring ? The only kiln I have is a small tabletop model for stained glass painting and other related small projects. Hope you are well and keeping warm. |

| Duh, I think you had said that before, but there has been some time lag... Sorry.
Years ago I took a pottery class 2 successive winters via the local college system. Classes (small and at night) were at a studio (if we could get there on icy mountain roads) so we had a kiln available. Most of the pieces I made were functional dinnerware but it's all gone now. Sure wish there were opportunities like that available around here. Every time I see something you have made, I am inspired to get the creative juices flowing again! |

| Hi Balvenie, I read through the threads but didn't see this question (sorry if I missed it and am asking again)...how thick would you say your clay was after you rolled out these tiles? I have a problem with my tiles turning up at the edges when drying - how do you prevent that?
Did you use a high fire clay? and if so can you tell me the name of the clay or what cone you had them fired at? Did you use wax over your glazes when you were dipping them?
Sorry about the detail but I love your tile work and I love tiles - I just can seem to master them:(
Thanks!! |
