Earlier this spring I purchased two identical 4-inch fans to circulate warm air form the basement into the greenhouse and back into the basement. The fans were a little loud running at full speed and rather than purchase a speed control I just wired them in series. Now they run at half speed and are quiet. I know that if one stops working both will stop. Is this ok? They have been running nonstop for three months and seem to be ok.
As long as their motors are not overheating from trying to draw more current, I would think it should be OK. If you have a way to measure the current, you could see for yourself. If the current is not more than one would be drawn from one fan by itself at full speed, it's unlikely they could overheat. However, if one fails, you could see conditions change where the other actually continues to work, and the current overheats the dead one.
