I know I'm a little on the fringes with my topic. Don't throw thos knitting needles at me. LOL

I'd love to find people in DG who might be interested in discussing machine embroidery, sewing and design digitizing.

If I'm in the wrong place, please let me know...gently. :-)

Machine embroidery machines use needles and you can use them to make art! Sounds like a good topic for in here. Now if you could just find someone else who uses them... I want to learn to use a regular sewing machine one of these days..

HI Marylyn...LOL Yep! Those people might be really hard to find. But ya never know. At least now I know I can discuss the subject without fear of getting tossed out on my ear. :-D

Oh, and I hope you *do* learn to use a "regular" sewing someday. Using mine have provided me with a lot of fun over the years. Sometimes I even surprise myself by doing something constructive. hehehe

Hi Julie, I don't think we are as small a group as people think. I have enjoyed making many item and embroidering them on my machine. I love to make quilts and have just started to do some with the embroidered blocks. What type of sewing do you like to do?

Hi dooleysmum. Over the years I've done all kinds of sewing from the kids clothes to reupholstering furniture and just about everything in between. I've even made a few simple block, tied together lap quilts...but nothing as nice as what I see in the magazines. My grandmother was an avid hand quilter and my aunt sewed everything, so it must be in my blood.

Right now, I'm trying to sew up some of the enormous fabric stash I've collected over the past 40 years. LOL...the problem is that I always fashion fabric and now that I've retired from work I have the fabric to make the clothes and no where to wear them. (Ain't it always the way? hehehe)

Thanks for the reply.

Julie,
Odd that I would find this thread now... in December, but here I am.
I do digitizing and machine embroidery.. not that I am very good at it, (been a beginner for 4 years now) but I do love to do it and try my best. I have a brother 2003D and use Embird for all my digitizing work.

I just saw this link. I also have a brother embroidery machine. I have PE Design digitizing software. I usually just use the software when I am doing lettering and use the free designs on AnntheGran website. I can download the free designs onto the card reader.

I love my machine and have used it for so many things. I love being able to personalize gifts.

I have made lots of baby items, quilts, bibs, onesies. What do you use yours for mostly?

Brenda,
I end up using it mostly for gifts. And to challange my brain. I love digitizing..but to be honsest it is almost always a surprise to see how it sews out. I have learned a few things along the way but in general my best lessons are using someone elses designs and watching them closly on the sewout.
My teenager draws japanese animation so it has been fun to take some of her artwork and digitize it. Of my 3 kids she is the only one that will beg me to make her clothes, so my machine does a lot of regular sewing. And it does sew like a dream.

Fran,

I use mine for a lot of gifts also. I made a bunch on monagramed purses this summer. Monagramed christmas stockings for a friend.

My teenager loves japanese animation also. Do you have pictures of the designs? It sounds like something my son would like. Aname designs are not easy to find.

I don't sew a lot of clothes...pajama pants are about all I do. I do a lot of quilts, curtains, slipcovers, pillows. Home dec type stuff mostly. I like to make my own patterns. I have done halloween costumes that turned out well. A genie outfit with embroidered pants and vest and cuffs with beaded trim. Also made a great cape that is lined with maroon velvet and is embroidered all around the hem.

I am looking into getting an embroidery machine, and thinking that one of the cheaper Brothers might be a good place to start. I see several Brother PE150's on Ebay, anybody use that? It is an older one but supposed to be one of the easier/better ones, especially for beginners.

I too am looking into getting an embroidery machine but I don't have mega bucks to spend!! And I'm concerned that if I buy one around $500 that I'll have a difficult time trying to figure out how to use it and then get so frustrated, the machine won't be used!! And for my budget, I'm looking at Walmart, and cautiously at eBay. I've never bought off eBay but I look constantly and wish I had the nerve to bid.

MaryinLa>>did you buy a machine yet?

girls, I bought my machine on ebay, scariest thing I have ever done. But.. I did try to do my homework. There is a brother yahoo group that I looked to for a litlle advice.. and also on a few of the embroidery forums. I ended up getting the Brother 2004D. On ebay I saved $2500.. the thing I didn't get was a warrenty from the manufacturer.. the machines were used in two-day seminars, therefor were not considered new. Three years later my machine is great (knock on wood)
Good luck in your purchase.

I also bought my machine off ebay. I bought a Brother 8500 3-4 years ago. I love it and have used it very often. It is about time to upgrade though. It is still working great. The only thing I have done is get it tuned up occassionally. I saved at least half off the retail price and got lots of extras that you wouldn't get buying it new. It was scary to send that much money to an unknown but I had emailed back and forth with all my questions to the seller and also spoke to her on the phone. She was kind enough to include a folder of helpful info that she had printed off about the machine, threads, hooping projects, needles and stablizers to use with different projects. It was very helpful since I had never used an embroidery machine but the Brothers are incredibly easy to use.
