Well, I finally listened to Al too. I've got part of the front put in and plan to get the rest done during the next week. I'm sure enjoying your gardens.

Edited to say that for some strange reason the order is backward in time instead of forward. It's an odd thing.

Very nice Doss.

Your lighting on your favorite Iris photo certainly brings it alive.
The entry way is very nice, you must have some hills In CA huh. My plants are used to being moved around a lot also.
The pool area in very nice and private. Are you able to get around to maintain those layered beds easily enough?
Is Butterfly maple a type of maple or cultivar?
Our Mhugo's are notorius for scale here - how do they do there?

Glad you got your tour up and running I'll check back later on it.
I have taken a lot of spring photos to add to mine, I just need to thin it out a bit first.

Al

We do live in a hill - but not a big one. It's pretty flat just a couple of blocks from us.

The layered beds are sometimes a hassle. I've put some new plantings in and have some more on the way. Once the hostas get going I don't know how it's going to go. The worst thing is that you can't step on the walls because they aren't mortared. I do have space in the back of most of it though. It's not too much trouble. I had to move out several ferns because I planted them not taking care about where the sun would be in the summer. I'm putting in some heuchera instead.

Enough about the beds.

"Butterfly" is the name of the cultivar. It's highly variegated. Mine is in so much shade that it is practically white all year. I need to paint the wall behind it's stucco and I've heard that you shouldn't paint it. I'll have to investigate it when the spirit moves me.

I haven't had any scale on my Mugho (knock wood). There is one that is about 20 years old though that has outgrown itself. I'll check and see whether it has scale on it. Thanks.

I'll go and check up on you too.

Nice garden doss!! If you ever decide to plant another tree, try a mimosa. They are georgous and smell soooo good when in bloom. Also your dog is cute!!

LOL Pepper. We had two mimosas!!! I had to take them down after the yard work was done because the contractor changed the grade and they got crown rot. They are gorgeous trees but my husband is very happy to have them gone so he doesn't have to clean up after them constantly. I've replaced them with betula 'Crimson Frost' that are more upright and don't hang over the roof. They also are messy once a year. If I had more room though I'd plant two more in a second. I do miss them. When I get to the back path, there will be photos of the birch trees there.

And that's only one of my cute dogs. I'll have to find a place to stick the other one in. She doesn't like to swim.

Thanks, Diann. I may be able to get more of the garden up in the next few days. And yes, it's lovely. It was crazy hot today and the pool was well-used by the neighborhood.

A pool? So unfair!! LOL We wanted to put one in when we moved in but we only have one flat spot and it the bottom of the yard out front. That is also where our laterals are, so no pool. I miss swimming.

What's a lateral? You must have a beautiful yard. Our pool takes up the primary level spot in our yard too. The front isn't flat either.

Learn something new every day! Guess it would be awkward to put a pool in there then.

Hi, Doss - Finally had some time to mosey around your gardens, and they are stunning! And your pools look so peaceful and calm, surrounded by beautiful plants and trees. My favorites are the pools and the entrance to your house. While not strictly formal, they are laid out and cared for with such great attention to the detail. As you can tell, I also love that look. How large is your property? It looks quite large - and I am just beginning to learn about trees and shrubs and yours fit perfectly into your background. Thanks for sharing - Dax

Thanks Dax, I still have several areas to put on the tour, so stay tuned. My lot is almost 1/2 acre. We are on a corner and have 24 foot setbacks on two sides. The house has made landscaping fairly easy for me because it's not square but provides pockets of spaces to design.

The house is 50 years old and we've lived here almost 40, so many of the trees and shrubs are mature. That really helps. Still, I've taken out many shrubs and trees and put some in and taken them out again.

And thanks so much for the compliment.

Doss,
Your garden tour was such a pleasure. Irises, Daffodils and Hostas, oh my!
The pool remodel, wow, what a huge undertaking. What fabulous results.

And your collection of maples! M, my husband loves Japanese Maples.

Thanks Dove,
I have two more maples to put into the diary. Don't know why I haven't yet. I can't travel so my garden has become a lovely refuge.

Doss, I was cruising around Dave's Garden site and came across the photos of your yard. I don't know that I have ever seen one more lovely - and so well tended! You could design for me anytime!!

Love your pups, too.

Well, it's beautiful Doss... the mix and flow of your flower beds is very graceful.

Speaking of maples...
Yesterday we were at Home Depot and they had about 5 of the most healthy looking Japanese maples, in 5 gallon pots. Kind of a fluke, I've never seen them there before.
We picked up a "Sangu Kaku Coral Bark" and a "Tamukeyama Laceleaf"

It looked like some of yours are in full sun, how hot does it get there?

We are pretty temperate - It looks as if you are pretty toasty being in the Tecumulah county area - am I right?

We can generally grow red laceleaf maples in the sun, but I'd imagine that any maple would appreciate shade where you are. Sango Kaku can grow in full sun here - I don't know what the requirements will be there. It does get to be a 25 foot tree though.

I noticed that the Tamukeyama is one that does well in hotter temperatures.
