Has anyone build window covers using the "PLYLOX" clips?
I have some large windows - 6' x 9' - it will take several sheets of 4x8 ply to cover - how do you secure them together? Remember they need to be removable and replacable as needed. I was thinking 5/4 decking and threaded inserts with machine screws.
Thanks darius,
The clips would be used around the outside to attach to the brick. I thought about 2x4s to connect the ply sheets, but need to be able to dis-assemble and re-assemble without losing strength. But 2x4s are cheap. I use a lot of deck screws at the restaurant to keep everything together. But if I remove one and replace in the same hole, I have to use either a bigger screw or a longer one, or it works itself out in short order.
I bought the Plylox clips but haven't had to use them yet, thank God! (aren't those things expensive for little pieces of metal) I do have the same situation though, I have a double window in my living room. I would think that a 1x6 or 1x8 would work better than a 2x4. It would have more coverage and be lighter and easier to move around.
I have not bought the plywood nor the framing yet. I still think the 5/4 6" decking would be the best. Narrower than 2x4, but treated with corners rounded. I could rip in half and cut a kerf with the table saw for the clips, and use a 1/4 x 1" rabbit on the opposite side to stabilize the plywood. That would still leave 1" for the t-nuts or threaded inserts. Then assemble the frame and install in the window casings with the Plylox. Finally bolt the ply onto the frame. Should be easy to assemble and remove.
Lowe's had 1/2" 3 ply sheets on sale for $9.95 - but was in between paydays.
