i have a bunch of these planters decorated in these hideous colors
can you think of a way i can disguise or paint this so that this wont
show and also doesn't look 'homemade'..ie sponged or whited...rubbed
to look shabby chic??

Sand it down and paint it in colors that you like. You can roll it on or use a brush unless you have a sprayer then you could use that.

I think if you paint it all one solid color it won't look homemade. I suppose you could pay a professional painter to do it for you if you're not confident in your painting abilities, but I'm not sure what else you can do to it besides painting it. I would recommend a coat of primer first (after sanding) to cover up some of the base color a bit, then 2-3 coats of whatever color you choose. Then assuming it's going to get splashed with water from time to time, you might want to put some varnish or something over the top to protect the paint a bit. People actually have to work quite hard to achieve those "homemade" looking effects that you don't want, so I really don't think you have anything to worry about as long as you put on enough coats of paint to cover up the original pattern.

They might look better if they didn't look so new. You could rub gel stain over them and they would look less bright, less new and sort of antiquie like.

I agree with fly_girl... but first I would sand some of the paint off of it to make it look older and then stain it to make it look even older...shirleyt
