I already posted this on the rose forum, but thought the Heirloom forum would be interested in it, too.
This wonderful rose was here when we bought this house 23 years ago. An old photo from 1930 shows it in the same place, just as huge as it is today, which is about 8-9' tall. This property has been lived in, mostly by farmers who seem to have loved gardening, since 1797, so who knows how old this thing is. It is completely cane hardy even here in Zone 5 and so robust I have to hack at it every spring to keep it from eating the whole yard. It blooms in June only with thousands of cherry red 1-1/2" wide flowers, and it is a high point of the season when it goes into bloom. It loves to have its long, pliable canes bent over the trellice to produce dozens of shoots at each bud. It never gets one black spot and even the Japanese beetles mostly avoid it in favor of the more tender roses in the rose garden. Have no idea if it even has a name, but just love it and thought I'd share the pix.
