I had a crazy idea while doing a marathon clean for weekend house guests. What if we played a sort of "Tag, you're it!" cleaning game where someone suggests a chore that we all do on a certain day, this chore should take about 30 minutes. If you can't do that day's chore...so what?! (Ask one of your kids or DH to do it??? Yeah, sure!!!) Then someone--the next one to post--suggests something for the next week.

That way, we can chat here about "HOW **BAD** IT WAS" and give tips on how we did it! Behind my bed on the wood trim was the worst...a solid "dust bunny" of feathers from pillows and dust...wow...how did I breathe???! lol

"TAG, YOU'RE IT"...ANYONE WHO WANTS TO NAME THE NEXT CHORE, CALL IT! WE ALL PROBABLY NEED TO DO IT!
EDITED WEEKLY TO ANNOUNCE THE LATEST GOAL EACH WEEK:

THURSDAY, JULY 13: MASTER BATH
TUESDAY, JULY 18: REFRIGERATOR
THURSDAY, JULY 20: GET DOWN THOSE HARD-TO-REACH WHAT-NOTS OR DECO ITEMS AND SUDS-CLEAN THEM IN THE SINK TO REMOVE LAYERS OF GRIME! :)
TUESDAY, JULY 25: ORGANIZE/CLEAN THE PANTRY
THURSDAY, JULY 27: BASEBOARDS!!
THURSDAY, AUGUST 3: ORGANIZE THE LINEN CLOSET
THURSDAY, AUGUST 10: HOSE DOWN THOSE SPIDER WEBS/ DIRT DAUBER NESTS FROM OUTSIDE WALLS / WINDOWS
THURSDAY, AUGUST 17: WASH ANY COLLECTIBLES YOU DIDN'T CLEAN ON JULY 20. OR...IF YOU DID THEM ALL...TAKE A WELL-DESERVED REST!
THURSDAY, AUGUST 24: CLEAN OUT A "STORAGE' OR 'JUNK' CLOSET
Thursday, August 31: Clean your bedroom!!
Thursday, Sept 14: Suck the dust mites out of your upholstery!!!

WE WILL ONLY DO THURSDAYS FROM NOW ON...

Now that sounds like a fun way to get it done. I have overnight company coming Saturday afternoon so I know I'll be up Friday night and Saturday morning working like a little beaver! It's my son and his family and the one thing worse than a mother-in-law coming is a DAUGHTER-IN-LAW snooping around! sr

LOL teateacher! I get so stressed when the in-laws visit...heck, even my parents now that I'm an adult and everyone has their eye on what I've done around here. I'd of never thought of having my grown children (someday!) coming over. It's easy to chalk it up to leaving it messy then because of the grandkids though. =) "I'll just have to pick up when they leave" kinda thing.

When I read "tag cleaning," I thought you were wanting to start a volunteer group to go around and clean off the spray-painted "tags" that street gangs leave on public places. I thought it seemed such a strange suggestion! LOL

I always think it's a good thing that I sometimes have houseguests because it forces what a friend describes as my "paroxysms of cleaning." I also root out every dust bunny, clean behind and under everything, make the fridge look like a store display, and am amazed to find this house gets enough dust on some windowsills to grow potatoes!

My favorite advice from my precious mother-in-law (whose house was ALWAYS immaculate, btw): "If someone comes to your house and peers into corners looking for dust, TELL THEM TO GO HOME!"

okay...there are 4 of us here now...does anyone want to suggest a little cleaning job for this coming Tuesday?? We can all do it, and then report that evening or the next day how it went--or didn't!~ :)

Biv...sorry about the misleading title! I just thought if one person suggests something, then the next person to check in at the end of the day can suggest another for the next day...and tag...you're it!

I know this sounds like a little thing, but I really need to take my lamp shades OUTSIDE and smack them lightly with a slightly damp, clean dish cloth. I do it every year, and boy, they really collect dust in the little crevices! Does that sound like a good, first goal??

And...maybe we should just do this say.. . Tue and Thursday of each week. That would probably be enough...yes?

Okay, tag you are IT! Tuesday is the 11th is Clean the Master Bathroom day. I hope you all read the thread about how you can take the vinyl shower curtain down and throw it in the washer. I usually let mine soak in the washer for a while with some bleach to get the mildew/mold off.

The heavier liners hold up betther over time.

I'd love to see before and after pictures.

Hey Biv...glad to see ya here, even if you just watch!

Okay...DarlinDeb called it...Tue is

***MASTER BATH***

day...we're talking some serious stuff here, like the grout lines or a junk drawer (haha...mine are all like that right now!)...but you only HAVE to do 30 minutes!!! That makes the chore more manageable...right??

Okay...since I just did a major clean last week, I'll be doing drawers and cabinets. AND, since I just cleaned...guess where last-minute stuff that I didn't have time to organize went...?? Look at these bathroom drawers with "papers" in them!! lol

Well, I got the bathroom pretty well done. I discovered "Dawn" dishwashing liquid will take that built up gunk off fiberglass shower walls.

The drawers in the master bathroom are all my hubby's. I discovered he won't throw things out even if they are outdated. The funniest thing I found was a flat top comb with a level in it. He didn't know he had that.

In 30 minutes I could clean the shower, toilet, mirror, counter and wipe out and reorganize 3 drawers.

Okay, what's next?

I didn't know how it was going to go for me, so I didn't jump in at the beginning. However, I did try to clean the master bathroom. I got the sink, tub and toilet done, but not the floor or shower curtain. Then I knew I had company coming, so I thoroughly cleaned the other bathroom. Two for one isn't too bad. Since nobady else has mentioned a new chore, I suggest the dreaded refrigerator as the project for this Tuesday. Now other people might be able to do their whole kitchen, but I have to keep my goals reachable.

Hey! I'm sorry I missed out on the start of this...but I just got home for Drdon's RU last Monday night and couldn't get organized...but I'm up for theis Tuesday!

To the one that mentioned washing her shower curtain in the washer...funny, but as I was taking my shower this morning...and looking at the dirty curtain...I thought..."I'll have to take this down and wash it with some big towels to get this clean!"...but I put it on "gentle spin" so it doesn't get so many creases in it.

Now...has anyone used "Mr Clean's Magic Eraser"?? IT works GREAT to get the smudges off cabinets and wood work...I LOVE them.

Ok...Lead on!

My rule of thumb: Never save any kind of restaurant packets. They never get used anyway. Sometimes my husband brings BBQ home; and the last time he did, he said, "I got plenty of extra sauce." Extra sauce for what? I knew it would be at least a month before we had BBQ from there again, and I wouldn't use the sauce on anything else in the meantime. So rather than have little plastic containers of moldy sauce getting lost at the back of a shelf, out they went!

Between that rule and my inventory, I waste very little food, don't lose things in the fridge, nor have an overcrowded fridge. Works for me! :)

Kanita...Kanita...Kanita...now, let's restate this. How about the crystal bowl up in the top of the china cabinet that always a dusting around, but could use a nice, sudsy bath?? Or (stretching the "do-dad" / deco thing a bit) the canisters in the pantry that still have some crusty flour prints left over from a Christmas dinner fixin'?? No??? No little china dog on the fireplace mantle that needs a "bath"??

Okay...I'm envious! I'm trying to do the minimalist thing...trying...

OK...Finally got the fridge cleaned. You would think it would be easy since I don't have any children hanging around in my fridge.

Talk about filthy. It was disgusting. I actually had science projects growing in there. I told my DH not to put leftovers in the fridge. Did he listen.NO!!!

He gets to clean it next time. :)

I'm in for the what-nots on Thursday...although I am currently going through this minimalist phase and getting rid of a lot of what I lovingly call 'clutter'.

Anyway at least that's done. I suppose I will be washing the what nots next week although I am not very excited about it. This is really giving me a kick in the rear to get things done that I hate to. Is it working that good for you guys?

Hey! I have 2 personal trainers too ! - ages 8 and 9. Mostly they have trained me to drive them to things.

However - I said I was up for this. I had one of those gigantic dill pickle jars in my fridge for at least 6 months. Last night I pulled it out, sliced the remaining pickles into a smaller container and that monstrosity is gone. I fed the human vacuums the leftover pizza for breakfast - over their protests - Mom this isn't breakfast I'm supposed to eat whole wheat waffles with real maple syrup... No dear this has some nutrition in it somewhere - I'm sure of it. Just eat it and someday when I have time to go to the grocery again we can have waffles.

I still need to do a real cleaning again -which I did do about 3 months ago. I have no idea why its full again. Well on to the next thing~

That's why I liked the two I mentioned. I can't do a diet where I have to follow something and go to the store and buy stuff to fix. Maybe Weight Watchers...if anyone could explain it to me.
I just need something to JUMP START me...some kind of "being accountable." :))

Believe me, ladies, if you start keeping a fridge/freezer inventory, that cleaning job will be soooo much simpler and quicker. And the inventory only takes a few seconds when you put something new in the fridge or finish something off.

Re weight loss: I didn't go on a diet per se. About 18 months ago, I simply began eating a totally heart-healthy diet. As a result I lost 20 pounds and have now maintained the same weight (117) for over a year. You get good nutrition, are never hungry, and lose easily. At least I did. I also started eating five times a day, and I think that helps, too. My between-meal snacks are usually nuts or fruit. Love nuts; dislike most fruit...so that part is the only hard part. Anyway, whatever system you use, GOOD LUCK!

I did manage the refrigerator this week (I never would have done it if not for this tag cleaning idea), but not the knick-knacks. I was busy Thursday digging broken glass and other junk out of the dirt where we just removed an old shed that was on this property for the last 50 years and used as housing for fruit pickers. So I was dealing with antique bottles too, only unfortunately they were broken ones. I'm up for the pantry next week. The last time I did that was a year ago, yikes!

Alyrics and dbibb...good for you! I gave away many "dust-catchers' to both my daughter and step-daughter, both of which moved into apartments of their own a few years ago. I does feel good to have clear space, AND when I visit them, I can see my old stuff, that I'll admit I love.

I even took back one thing that I had given my daughter, because of sentimental reasons. It's a little polymer (read: plastic!!) replica of a canopic jar top from King Tut's tomb, and here's the story. It's a recumbant lion that has a tongue sticking out, and when my nephew (who is now over 6 feet tall!!) was little, he picked it up and stuck HIS tongue out at it. Then he threw it on my tile in the entry, and both the tail and one ear suffered from the blow. I never told his mother because she SPANKED...and hard! Someday I will give it to Caleb and remind him of the story!! :)

OK, I did the knick-knacks last night. I watched TV as I collected and dusted. Then on the commercials washed alot to the items. I gathered up a small box of unwanted items to go to Goodwill. This is great.

The pantry thing is great for me as I had to remove everything to garbage bags because we had to spray for fleas in the cellar. After a month of spraying we found the trick of vacuuming was the greatest asset. Now no more cats are allowed to sleep over. Only problem is they are sleeping under my Hellebores and other plants!! Pantry Cleaning/Organizing Tips...

I've been doing Tip #1 for about 20 years. It works!! The other is a new idea, and I'll see if it stands the test of time.

Tip#1: Sometimes when I clean my pantry (and always when I MOVE), I take a perm. marker and place a 6 (for 2006) on all canned goods and spice bottles, packages of flour, sugar, etc. Then if you take something out (maybe in 2 years??)and see the 6, you will know when something is real old.

I'm going to try something I've been wanting to do for a long time, and this is TIP #2. This works for me bc my pantry also has shelves for dish storage, appliances, etc.

I'm going to place a sticky (cut up a larger one--nothing written on it) in all those platters, bowls, thermoses, etc. that I rarely use. If I have not used the item in a few years, it is going to go out!!! I have very little storage in my "retirement house" (we downsized a lot!!) and cannot afford to give space to things I don't use. And...I have no space to place new things that I find that I "must have'!!!

Also, I recently helped BOTH DD's wash their "stuff" like we are doing here...I told them both "If I had known I was going to have to continue washing them I would have given them to Goodwill instead of you two!! "

Roadrunner, there's a solution for your deep shelves so that things don't get lost because they're hidden. I have stair step shelves for my canned goods, so everything is visible. They're plastic and are available at HD, probably Lowes or any other big box store. My shelves are standard size, and this system gives me four levels: the three stair steps plus the shelf they sit on. If you or your DH is handy, you could build something that would be custom sized for your deeper shelves; of course, height also has to be taken into consideration. When I add new canned goods, I simply shift the older things toward the front and put the new things in the back (topmost) shelf. All similar canned things are kept together, such as tomato sauce. These stair step shelves will also accommodate other products, too. My canned goods are stored behind a glass door, and this arrangement actually looks attractive. Sometimes I find myself buying something simply because the label would look good in my homey display. :))

Bivbiv...Thanks for the ideas...if my DH was still alive he would have built these steps for me...he was handier than a button on the out house door!! Now...that's handy! He could look at a picture of something made of wood and duplicate it...

I do have a couple of step shelves...and 2 turn tables...that helps a lot!!

I'll make a trip to HD...still have a gift card from Christmas!! Thanks for the notion! Jo

Jo, I'm so sorry you no longer have your husband. You were fortunate (as was he) that he was so talented. I know men who can't change a lightbulb and certainly wouldn't want to be married to one of them.

Well, I got to the dish storage area of the pantry and then the 30 minutes was up! haha...
No "inclination" to move on to the cleaning products area. I just redid the food area about a month ago, and BIVBIV..you would be proud of me. I ALPHABETIZED the spices!!!! haha

All right...who has a suggestion for what to do Thursday? And is 2x a week too much? Should we cut back to one day? We're talking things that don't get a regular cleaning like the toilets, kitchen (from meal prep), floors, etc.

Connie, wow! Alphabetized no less! I'm impressed; congratulations! Mine aren't alphabetized, but I use them so often that I can lay my hands on the one I want. Mine, btw, are kept in the freezer once they're opened. All dried herbs and spices keep their fresh taste much, much longer this way.

I also keep citrus zest in the freezer. Its oil stays nice just as if the fruit had been freshly zested. Whenever I suddenly decide orange, lemon or lime would add something to a dish, I don't have to have the fresh fruit on hand; the zest is always there.

Ok, girls. Those are my two household tips for the day. Go forth and clean! Me...I'm sitting here with my feet propped up on an ottoman. And I intend to stay this way awhile. :)

Well, tomorrow I have to meet my sister-in-law at her house at 10:00 for a day of furniture/wall hangings shopping. She and my DB just bought a new (to them) house. I am an unofficial decorator (my dad and ex were homebuilders, so I got my education in the "field"!!) and everyone in the family expects me to help them! Oh well...it's family! :)

So...I'll round the bases when I come home...unless it's too late. I usually use something like "Mr. Clean" or Windex on a damp rag. Any other suggestions? I find that I use Windex for a lot of other things...because I like the clean smell.

Roadrunner: I get my 7 year old son to help me with the baseboards (when they get done) just give DGGD a damp rag and tell her to go to town. That way you wont have to worry about her getting any cleaners where they shouldnt be. I have discovered with my own kids that they just love being assigned chores and feel like they really accomplished something when finished. Only one chore at a time though, or they feel overwhelmed and wont do it. Got my 7 year old son to help with housework last Saturday and gave him a dollar when we finished. He thought he was rich! just on Thursdays! Isn't that how it goes...first it's every day...then every other..then twice a week...then once...and finally...just when you have to!! :) Such is the life of a housefrau...

How about re-organizing and re-stacking the linen closet?
Seems like no matter how I try the stacks eventually get off kilter and things are falling around.

And how does anyone else keep their linens smelling fresh if they've been in there a while?

All righhhhttt...we have a Thursday job to do...the LINEN CLOSET!!!

I don't have a lot of extra sets of sheets, --just one set on and one waiting, per bed--and I rotate mine when I change them. So...they still smell like the softener I"ve used. I used to keep all sorts of linens, but have had to downsize everything bc our retirement house has gorgeous views but NO STORAGE! :) I have one small walk-in for each bedroom, and 2 hall closets with shelves. So with my linens, I have bins for light bulbs, batteries, candles, gift wrap, hobbies, etc. BUT...I think this is good for me because I used to be a real "pack rat"!!!! Now, I can't.

Hi, this sounds like a great way to get the house cleaned up, and I need all the help to get motivated when it comes to housework!! I have read most of the comments posted and it sounds like fun, can I join in. If I have read this properly I should be doing my linen cupboard now. Isn't that lucky - I actually did it last week and managed to give away heaps. The best thing is that I can actually fit (and find) all the linen in it now!! I even found a permanant home for the vaccuum cleaner - at the bottom of my linen cupboard!!!

Okay, the picture is probably sideways. That is my "poopy dawg" in the picture he is about four months old and I'm sure he will want to "help" me if I let him.

Good Golly Miss Molly, it has been ages since I tried to straighten that closet. I even had little printed stickers that said what was suppose to go where. I guess I'll use a stronger glue or tape over the stickers this time 'cuz they have gone with the wind. I thought I'd put the stickers in so my hubby could find stuff if he needed to (yeah, right like that's ever gonna happen.)

Hey, roadrunner you are so wise. You must impart more gems of wisdom to us. Oh, by the way the gourd seeds you gave me are busy wandering everywhere. I'll give you the pick of the litter; however, hubby has his eye on those canteen gourds. He thinks they look like little pumpkins.
