(Sorry about the typo in the title; I don't know how to edit that.)
I got disgusted with myself for throwing refrigerated food away because I either forgot it was there or because it got pushed to the back of a shelf and remained there until it wasn't edible. (I'm sure I'm not alone in this.) For ages I'd thought about keeping a running inventory; and now that I've found how easy it is--and how very effective--I'm just sorry I didn't do it years ago!
I keep an inventory sheet and a pencil attached to the fridge door. Every time something goes into the fridge or freezer, it's noted on the sheet, along with the date. I also write the date on freezer packages in case I have duplicate items frozen. When something is used up, it's then crossed off. There are separate columns for fridge and freezer, in addition to a column to add things to my marketing list.
Not only have I eliminated almost all waste, the refrigerator is never overcrowded as it sometimes used to be; so it's easier to find things...which means not standing with the door open for several minutes. And by always knowing what's there, it also helps in planning meals.
Of course, if you or your spouse don't like leftovers... :) I have several friends whose husbands won't even eat leftovers. Good thing I'm not married to someone like that; it would drive me nuts!
If you try this or a similar system, please let me know how it works for you.
