Budget is limited and I was wondering if anyone out there knows how, or what you have to do, to paint tiles in the bathroom. My house was built in the 1970's and has those god awful tiny bottle green tiles with the white grout inbetween!!! What's worse they're not only in the main bathroom but the ensuite to our bedroom as well!!!! Can anyone help a poor, desparate, I can't stand my bathroom individual!!!!

Here are some directions from Lowe's website:
[HYPERLINK@www.lowes.com]
I don't know if painting is an ideal technique for changing the whole color of all the tiles in an area that's going to be getting exposed to water--the step where you sand off the finish on the existing tile is going to make it more porous so that water could get through it easier which is not going to be good if the tile's around the shower/tub. It's also not going to be that durable if it's on surfaces that are getting a lot of wear and tear, I've seen it used more where people want to add a stencilled border or something decorative to plain tiles, but not to change the color of all your tile.

You might also look on HGTV's website and see if they have any ideas, I remember once on Debbie Travis's Facelift where she did some sort of stucco-ish cement technique over tiles that ended up looking like limestone. Lots of work, but not too expensive and the final look was really nice (and more durable and able to stand up to water better than painting the tiles)

Hi Lee, I was just looking up the same thing las night and found a paint especially for for tiles and laminex, it is made by White Knight Paints.
[HYPERLINK@www.whiteknightpaints.com.au] ., or you can buy a can of ESP which gives the tiles a grip fot the paint to cling to, then paint whatever colour(s) you want with an enamel paint. My friend has done this in two of her houses it looks great. Cheers Anne

Hi Anne, Great to have someone who lives so close. Thanks for the advise. I will look into it. It is especially interesting to hear that your friend has done this and it has worked. Sometimes you just don't know if it is worth the hassle to do it this way (to help save some money). Sometimes it ends up costing a lot more than if it had if you just re-tile!!! If you paint with enamel do you have to seal it with anything or is it OK to just leave it?
We will be on Stage 4 water restrictions very soon. We are just waiting for the authorities to decide on the date. We can water twice a week, but we all of us here think that it is taking them too long to bring in the next stage (4). There has been very little rain (if any at all) and it doesn't look like we will get anything much in the future. It's not good, and it's not going to get any better. I think we are going to continue with this drought for a few years yet, although we are all hoping for many days of slow rain. :-) Lee

Just tonight on HGTV selling a house show they featured an old bathroom w/ pink tiles and had a commercial painter come in and paint the tiles/grout white. The cost was $900 and the decorator said the issue of dirty grout is gone now that they have been painted. So there must be a site detailing this process for the diy. I know the contracted painter had to deglaze the tile with a liquid sandpaper prior to painting.

I saw that too...but I have to say that if it was a DIY project, they would have had the handymen on the show do it instead of hiring a pro. I watch that show all the time and this has to be one of the first times I've ever seen them hire someone to do a job rather than having the guys on the show do it. And since the guys on the show are pros they can probably do things that the average DIY'er can't, so if they didn't have them doing the painting I'm sure there was a really good reason! Maybe it is something you can do yourself, but my guess is it's a fairly advanced type of project so make sure you do your homework first.
