I have many EE and they are beginning to have lots of pups.
I need to get over it, but I can't seem to be able to mulch the extras.
So...I have been trading them, trading a few with a local GH, and giving away plants to local charities.
I can overwinter some, but not the quantities I currently have (about 100 too many).
I thought it would be nice to get some return on investment (money to pay for potting soil, water, pots). But I am not prepared to open a business (backyard or internet sales).
I have thought about selling at the local Famers Market, but I am unsure if I will get a fair price. No one at our market sells tropicals. Only 1 vendor sells trees for about $15 each. The perennials run from $2 for a six pack to $4 for a 4" container.
I grow the unusual EE (variegated, odd shaped leaf, different color stems and leaves).
Realistically will people at a rural farmer's market (Athens is rural, but has a large active market) pay $5-12/plant [they retail for $10-25]?
They would be in 6" pots, 1-2' high with 2-3 leaves.
We have real problem with deer and these are resistant so I would try to market them as "deer resistant". They also do well in ponds, so perhaps that could be an angle.
But they are not hardy to our zone and I am unsure if people will be willing to pay this price for a plant that one needs to overwinter (dig up and store in cold but not freezing garage) or treat them like annuals.
Any thoughts?
Alternatively do you think there is a market to sell them to others for them to sell in their GH or at the market?
To do this economically I think I would have to sell in bulk and would probably have to knock down the price by 30% to cover shipping and still allow the purchaser to make a profit.
Any more thought?
Thanks, ROX {The person who needs some therapy to accept that mulching is not a crime.]
