I just got my fence done. It's Cedar 2 1*6*6 and the rail is treated 2x4. I plan to stain it next week.
but there are so many choices of staining material from home depot or walmart.
what is the best choice for Cedar 2 and treated rail?
I'm in Texas and it's very hot andry now. Is it OK to stain after just one week after the fence being done? what if it expands later during more damp season?
another other tips will be greatly appreciate?

If you're staining I don't think you have to worry about expansion/contraction--if you were painting that would matter because then the paint could peel easier but stain soaks into the wood so it shouldn't matter. Are you just staining or are you doing some kind of waterproofing/protection as well? I ask because one of the more recent issues of Consumer Reports had info on brands of wood treatments that were the best, but it was only waterproofing sorts of things (some of which add color as well), not just plain wood stains. So if that's what you're looking for, you could check their website and see if it has anything, or else check your local library.

thanks for the info. My primary goal is to protect it from rotting due watering and raining. but i am also interested in putting on some natural color (as Cedar color)

I would check out Consumer Reports then and see which products they recommended (I would help you out and tell you what they said, but I can't figure out where I put that issue...if I run across it I'll post again, but your best bet is to see if you can find the info on your own, that'll be faster!)
