Today was the first time I have ever come into contact with this type of spider. Let me just say that it Scared Me To Death. It is living in my Butterfly Bush right next to my front porch steps. I was weeding my flowerbeds & looked up. My husband heard me around back & thought I found a copperhead snake. He told me that he thought it was a writing spider. Since I thought they might be harmless I had a talk with it & decided I would get some more information about them before I did anything. After reading the stories posted here I am going to let it be. It is a beautiful spider. It is about 2 inches long & I can't guess how long it's legs are. The web has a beautiful thick zig-zag pattern down the middle. Could someone tell me how I can tell if it is female or male & if I might have more next year. Thank you.
