After a recent mosaic project, I found I had several bags
of the very large clear glass gems leftover.
What to do? What to do?
Aha! Spread the gems flat side down on a sheet of
something you can read, such as a newspaper. Then
pick out, oh, about six to twelve of the most clear. A lot
of them will have bubbles, scratches and such, so try
to find the best glass globs.
Then, using a quarter (yep, a 25 cent coin, folks) trace
the shape of the coin on top of a photo, a picture from a magazine,
whatever catches your eye. As I decorate the dining area in a wine
theme, I used an old Wine Enthusiast magazine to find various pictures
of wine bottles, wine labels and such.
Using Mod Podge, simply coat the image and attach it to the glass
glob, making sure to brush a bit on the back to make it flat. After it
thoroughly dries, glue on a heavy round magnet. Allow to cure and
then you've got some very attractive and strong magnets.
This first picture shows one of the magnets upside down so you can
see which type of magnet I'm referring to. Sorry the image is a bit dark,
it's hard to get good photo light in the office.
You can go crazy. You could use labels from food, pictures of your
pets or kids, flowers, fabric to match your kitchen, dried and pressed
flowers, letters of the alphabet from magazines, newspaper comics,
heck - you could even make tiny mosaics.
That is cool. I've been using the flat magnets that are about business card size that come in junk mail with real estate agent's or insurance ads, and taping pictures from newspapers and what have you. The clear packing tape is the right size, I just cut the picture a little smaller than the magnet so the tape sticks. Also, good scissors cut those magnets pretty easily. Maybe if you find bigger ones, you could use food or wine labels, and mod podge over them.
That's really neat WUVIE, I gotta start checking these forums more often!
Thank you JuneyBug! I made several of these using kitchen themed pictures. They were very easy to do and turned out great! I plan to make some as gifts for co-workers and acquaintances next Christmas. They are very inexpensive to make and can be easily customized to each person for a nice little gift! They would also lend themselves well as party favors or token gifts for special occasions.
Love this! I'm thinking of trying it with family pictures. If it works, finding faces small enough, then giving the magnets to the person featured as a "just because I love you" gift.
Have you see the decoupage John Derian does. It's fabulous. For the glass bathroom medicine shelves see the section under decoupage titled "multi piece wall hangings" for the glass globs (as Wuvie says) see the section titled "Ephemera"-he calls them "buttons". Browse around and get ideas. He's one of my favorites! http://www.johnderian.com/index_home.html
These globs might make cute earrings, bracelets, pendants and cufflinks. I especially like the themed magnets (like wine) as Wuvie shows. How about a new baby theme for the new mom?
