Don't pay for your directory assistance calls -- instead, call 800-373-3411.

Sometimes they'll play a brief ad and instruct you to press "2" to learn more about the sponsor. Other times, though, there are no ads.

It is usually an automated, voice-recognition system. First, it asks for (1) the city and state (2) whether it is for a business, government or residential listing and (3) the listing name you seek. If the computer can't understand you or there is conflicting information, you're put through to a live operator. The only caveat: Unless your memory for numbers is very good, have a pen handy, because they do not offer to connect you automatically.

My experience is it works great! I don't ever call 411 anymore, especially from my wireless phone with our carrier's $1.49/call charge! I now have speedial 4 for FREE411. Why would we pay that when this is free?

Yes, it's legitimate. See this Snopes.com coverage: http://www.snopes.com/inboxer/nothing/free411.asp
